The anodizing is a real pain to get off. What about a replacement outer? Or powdercoating the old one? I had a 63 Chevy II and like to never got the aluminum to the point of polishing and then it was constant maintenance. Just my .02!

I was afraid of that.. I have a nice grill now.. It has just lots it luster.. I will keep looking to see what others have done..

Looks good on the patches. It's always a learning process and little differences can help a lot. I also keep having to remind myself to tack and wait...have another project to work on or take some pictures between tacks to let it cool down to keep the possible warpage to a minimum...

On the anodizing....search here and youtube for videos of polishing aluminum. Use ZEP brand drain cleaner to strip the anodizing off...then the aluminum can be worked and polished...

First, if you have oil canning on the bedside around the light, you can remove some of that by heating the high (expanded) area with a propane torch then quench it with a cold wet rag. This will tighten it up. I was leary of doing this myself but I had a severely smashed in bedside and I could take more chances with the repair. It worked fine and didn't add any warping and no more oil canning.

But here is the cautionary note: adding heat to the panel could cause warping. Do this at your own risk. If you look up dent removal with a torch on youtube you can see it being used. Not the greatest for dents, but it works to shrink the metal.

Nice job on the patches though. They look good.

Second, I had similar problems with my aluminum surround. I sanded out the scratches and polished those areas up. To me it gave it a patina look that wasn't all that noticable unless you were right there looking down on it. I did not do the entire surround to even it out because I had already decided to replace it with one of the new chrome steel versions. They are much more durable than the aluminum, which will scratch easily and usually have a dull look no matter what you do. Some places sell the chrome steel version for the same as the OEM style, top banana for example did when I bought mine this spring.

Got the inside of both bedsides and both sides of the front bed panel primered..

















Next week I will primer the outside of the bedsides and start on the body work…

yes, it helps if you slow down and take your time.. thanks for the tip on stripping the anodizing..

Wired up the micro relays for the cruise control. Worked out well…








About to go out and start bolting the bedsides to the floor and trial fitting the steering column.

Trail fitted the steering column and wheel.. I think it looks good..







Next up is:
Coming up with a firewall cover/grommet for the PCM wires.


Redoing the relays for the Cruise Control.. They work fine as they are but I want to redo them so that they will work better with the DD gauge cluster.

Figuring out what to do with getting fuel into the new tank. Thinking of putting some type of fuel cap in the bed of the truck near the left inner fender and bedside.

OK.. final post on the Cruise.. Decide to put the relays into a project case and clean everything up. I added a third relay to feed to cruise input on Dakota Digital gauge set.






Just finished meeting with Kyle (screaminchevypickup) to discuss him finishing the bodywork and paint. I enjoyed visiting with him and discussing the process. I am really leaning towards letting him do it..

Need to order the door seals so that I can start fitting the doors and the other gaps before I tear it all down. Anybody have suggestions on where the best place to get the door seals from?

It's been a while since I checked into this build,,, wow, lots of progress (and pictures). Looking good!! I like the work you did on the side marker lights, I think I'm going to try to "french in" some 72 side marker lights on mine. I also like the steering wheel, and cruise control for those long trips, pretty cool! Keep it up!!

I am not sure about the truck weatherstripping but if its anything like 69 Camaro seals I would buy Metro brand and stay away from SofSeal. The Metro is more like OEM. I used a SofSeal trunk lid seal and liked not got the trunk to shut. After it did shut it stood the lid above the quarters a good 1/8" of an inch even after days in the sun. It is Metro all the way for me!!!
