Back decades ago when I was trying to go everywhere I could in my K/20, I never found much problem with the long wheelbase. It was usually the width that was a problem, plus I had a shell that stuck up above the cab about a foot that would catch tree limbs or worse, a tree trunk if you were off camber which is often the case. I probably should have bought a SWB K/10 with cab high shell considering what I was trying to do with it,

I just noticed that there was a Suburban with you, and how you had to add overhanging racks for spare tire and gas cans.
It's like anything else. An advantage in one area is a disadvantage in another. I don't have as much space as Larry's K10 does inside. All of us with the campers really had to watch in the trees and the off camber stuff. On this trip I didn't drag the rear bumper at all, but last year in Moab I drug it alot. It depends on the terrain I guess.

Re: post up your camping pics

we're so busy at work right now i was only able to get a week off. and 1 day for loading and 1 day for unpacking left us 5 days, so we stayed close and went to Brook lake, 'bout 120 miles away.
it's a beautiful little lake but it's cool there, it's at the 5100 ft mark. at night it was dropping down to the high 30's. days were nice at around the mid 60's.
two things about Brook, it's windy, and the skeeters are outrageous, unless the windy wind is blownin'.

Re: post up your camping pics

Here's some more from the desert trip. I'll post up a link to CK5 where I've got the full write up. All pics are remote linked so you don't have to be a paying member to see the images. But reposting it again is a chore I don't have time for right now, but it's there to read if you want to.

Somewhere along Fix It Pass:

Waiting for Larry after he hung is rear axle on a rock, again. We need to shave that 14b.

Larry's ride in it's native habitat.

Our buddy Ian's CUCV. Beastly 8.1L/5-speed on one tons.

Eating lunch in the shadow of the westbound lanes of I-70 in Eagle Canyon.

The Eagle Canyon Arch.

Camp night #2

Reds Canyon.

Oasis in the desert on Poison Spring Canyon.

Lunchtime stop.

This is about as close as anybody could get to feel like they are wheeling inside the Grand Canyon and climbing out. Stunning views on every turn.

Another lunch spot..Living on the edge.

Is that "devil's club" left of the atv in the last picture?

Last picture post 1125; I didn't see all the others when I asked.

Yep it was the swan's song for the 5.3 in my truck. I didn't know it at the time but it was. But the crazy thing was that it did the best it ever did on that trip. I kept my foot in it most of the time to keep it in the the power band on the highway. I actually was able to stay ahead of Larry and Ian's 8.1 powered rigs on a couple of passes and keep up with them on the interstate when we were hauling ass to Green River.

Once we slowed down on the way back the 5.3 turned in the best fuel economy I had seen since putting on the camper.

But the 8.1 will be a game changer. I won't have to plant my foot in it to maintain speed. The 5-speed will give me one less thing to worry about too compared to the 700. It's going to be a whole new animal to figure out for sure.

I always enjoy dieseldawg's pictures!

Amazing how some of that inland country is so much drier than the the coast. That part looks a lot like Montana.

is the west coast geography gmc. from Nor Cal threw Oregon, Wash, BC the weather hits the coastal mts and dumps the majority of it's rain and snow on the west side, very little makes it over the mts, hence it can get pretty dry on the other side
Yeah, I know eastern WA is like the Sahara (I wanted to ask them how many years to the inch of rain? lol) but back in the late 1970s I drove up/down through McBride and Prince George and the change didn't seem that dramatic. It all seemed pretty wet and green compared to Colorado, but we turned off at Kitwanga and up through the Cassiar (both ways) so I never got down to the real coast (except for a stop at Stewart on the way back).

Coming back I picked up a couple backpacking/hitch hiking at Kitwanga and they were headed down to Vancouver for a Folk Music festival. I just almost drove them all the way down there but I left them at PG and continued down to Jasper and Kootenay NP where I did some backpacking and met some folks that I still correspond with today. I'm kind of disappointed that I didn't see that Quesnel and Williams Lake cowboy country. Only just a few years ago I ran into the Rich Hobson books!

Re: post up your camping pics

know the area well gmc.
was born in Dawson Crick, lived in PG too.
also lived in 100 Mile House, Eagle Creek area, a few miles south of Williams lake.
love driving the Cassiar, we quadded into the Cassiar mines from Jade City one yr, was an awesome ride, stayed at Boya and Watson lakes a few times as well.
Salmon Glacier on the way to Stewart is pretty awe inspiring too
been saving money for another trip up there in the near future.
any of these these signs look familiar?

funny you mention Williams Lake, my wife so wants to move there, mostly cause she can get a transfer there for her job. for the last yr we have been scoping out places to live around that area.
i would rather move to Tatla/Anahim lakes area...Willie's puddle is a little too flat for me, i NEED the mountains out my door...
