Do you have any previous training or experience you could fall back on until the building trade picks back up?
In high school I interned at an architectural firm, took courses for drafting and design in high school, and took college classes focusing on math and business but still have a bunch of hours needed for a degree....
I have 16yrs experience designing cabinetry on the computer/remodeling/installing cabinets/managing showrooms, etc...related to cabinetry, kitchens, and baths. (19 yrs counting hs and internship) I've found side work but it's slow now obviously...

Other than that my skills are related to restoring trucks or manual labor but man, what some people are accepting for things like cutting grass/cleaning gutters I don't see how they make any money after paying for their gas...

I have companies I work as an independent contractor for. But I'm too slow/meticulous at labor to make any money at it with the local labor rates the way they are.

LOL! I seem to have the same problem sometimes too. And when I do find the camera the memory card is never in it. Then the search begins for her laptop. Women! what can you do?

Everybody is so desperate to just keep the doors open that they are taking jobs at zero profit margin just to make payroll. It just ends up driving our wages even lower and making work even harder to come by.

I wish you the best of luck in finding a full time job that pays you what you are worth. There are so many people out there willing to work for next to nothing that employers are able to offer way less money and still find people to do the job. It really sucks. Around here jobs that paid $20+/hr three years ago are advertised at $10 & $11 now with no benefits.

I took a $10/hr pay cut just to get a job again and get off unemployment.

exactly!

At $10/hr then after gas/taxes I can make more restoring and selling truck parts. I stopped unemployment a while back (only claimed it for about 6 wks- even though I'm now out of work for 9 months-33 weeks) because I am getting by, but man, it's tempting to take that money BACK from the gov't that I've paid in....

I was seriously considering trying to work for myself but just don't have the place to work since I have no garage at this house. I know I could take home more than most of the jobs out there are offering, especially after you add in child care and fuel.

I did the same thing with unemployment. I could have kept taking the money and holding out for a job in my career field but decided it was time for a change and jumped ship.

Re: Rebuild on a shoestring.....continued

I swear there was a build thread around here somewhere. I saw things like pictures of work that had been done, descriptions of work done, some parts were being found/sold/renewed. It was right here not that long ago. I have no idea what could have happened to it. Did the kids take it somewhere and forget it? Did somebody borrow it and not tell me? I'm always losing stuff, but I know it was here just a few days ago and now it's just gone.

Sorry I couldn't help myself. I saw all the other on the wagon and wanted a ride. All though I have no room to talk. I haven't done anything with mine.
