Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
I have no idea if this will help, but I found an article on Chevytalk.org that talks about having a similar issue.
http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/201721/ I just did a google search, looking to see if there was a fuel pump eccentric on a big block (haven't worked with one before). Maybe the rod they talk about in the link above is possibly frozen in the block? It's worth checking.

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
Ok well you have ruled out the tank, lines, filter and pump, but you haven't ruled out the cam or pushrod, one step at a time man you will get this.
A standard pushrod is inexpensive so I would install one and repeat the experiment, because it's possible that the carbon fiber pushrod is doing something funky when heated that a standard one doesn't so it's worth a shot. At some point if the problem persists it will get to the point where it makes more sense to just put an electric pump on it and call it a day but you aren't there yet. Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
Finally got some time this evening to do some double checking on this fuel problem. First I unhooked the fuel line out of the pump and cranked it over, a few seconds later I had a half of a water bottle of fuel. Then I started it up let it run till it died, about 10-12 minutes. After it died I pulled the line off the pump again cranked it for a few seconds, nothing in the bottle. I got my wife to get in and she cranked it over quite a few time and still nothing out of the pump. I can't see having 2 bad brand name fuel pumps. I think it's time for an electric pump to try!!!

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
I still try the 12 dollar Dorman fuel pump pushrod... It fixed my Big Block issue... and it is alot cheaper than the electric pump. Just my .02

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
That's kind of a coincidence Ed, I ordered one from Summit last night. I told myself if this don't fix it I'm going with an electric pump!!!!

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
Understood. I bought the pushrod I used from Summit too. I hope that's all it is.

I hope the new pushrod solves your problem Jason, wish I could give you some helpful thoughts but I'm no mechanic

Hopefully that's the culprit. Keeping my fingers crossed that it fixes your problem.

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
Well the $10 pushrod didn't cure the problem either, so tomorrow morning I'm going to hit the local parts stores and see if I can find an electric fuel pump. Probably just do a quick hook up to see if it works and if it does I'll clean up the wiring and plumbing next week. Keep your fingers crossed guys!!! On the plus side I've received almost everything to finish up my interior, handles, sill plates, rear cab panel carpet, and a radio.

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
That sucks! Did you ever check to see if you had metal shavings (or dust) in your oil?

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
Well, it sucks that the mechanical stuff didn't work, but awesome that you got it working with the electric pump setup.

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
Engines ran for years and years with mechanical pumps, I just don't understand what's going on with this one....

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project
Ok so get a fuel pump block off plate then sell both of the fuel pumps, both push rods and the old distributor and get some of your money back.

Thanks Scott, it was about to drive me crazy. Tomorrow I'm going to advance the timing a little and see what happens. It seems a little sluggish on takeoff.
