Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project

I have no idea if this will help, but I found an article on Chevytalk.org that talks about having a similar issue.
http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/201721/
I just did a google search, looking to see if there was a fuel pump eccentric on a big block (haven't worked with one before). Maybe the rod they talk about in the link above is possibly frozen in the block? It's worth checking.

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project

Ok well you have ruled out the tank, lines, filter and pump, but you haven't ruled out the cam or pushrod, one step at a time man you will get this.
A standard pushrod is inexpensive so I would install one and repeat the experiment, because it's possible that the carbon fiber pushrod is doing something funky when heated that a standard one doesn't so it's worth a shot.
At some point if the problem persists it will get to the point where it makes more sense to just put an electric pump on it and call it a day but you aren't there yet.

Knomadd, I found that same article when I googled the problem a couple nights ago. I didn't know there were two different style arms on the pumps???

Xeen, I haven't ruled out the cam, I just don't even want to think about that!!! Anyway, when I get a little extra time hopefully next week, I'm going to try to troubleshoot everything step by step again. I know crazy things can happen but this motor only has probably an hour and a half, give or take, of run time. I just can't see anything being worn out. I did call one of my buddies last night and he has a new 850cfm carb that I'm going to throw on just to try to eliminate some items that could be the cause. I wouldn't care to put an electric fuel pump on if I new that was the problem. I just would like to figure it out so I don't keep tossing money at it. This working 7 days a week and 10 to 12 hours a day SUCKS. (I guess it helps when I keep buying parts I don't need)

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project

Finally got some time this evening to do some double checking on this fuel problem. First I unhooked the fuel line out of the pump and cranked it over, a few seconds later I had a half of a water bottle of fuel. Then I started it up let it run till it died, about 10-12 minutes. After it died I pulled the line off the pump again cranked it for a few seconds, nothing in the bottle. I got my wife to get in and she cranked it over quite a few time and still nothing out of the pump. I can't see having 2 bad brand name fuel pumps. I think it's time for an electric pump to try!!!

I still try the 12 dollar Dorman fuel pump pushrod... It fixed my Big Block issue... and it is alot cheaper than the electric pump. Just my .02

Understood. I bought the pushrod I used from Summit too. I hope that's all it is.

Thanks guys, I hope this fixes it too. I'm not going to get my hopes up with the luck I've had on this truck. But after spending $450 some odd dollars on the distributor and fuel pump it would be my luck that a $10 item was the problem We should know tomorrow evening, I forgot yesterday was a holiday and my order from Summit is a day behind.

Re: Jason's 70 Big Block SWB Project

Well the $10 pushrod didn't cure the problem either, so tomorrow morning I'm going to hit the local parts stores and see if I can find an electric fuel pump. Probably just do a quick hook up to see if it works and if it does I'll clean up the wiring and plumbing next week. Keep your fingers crossed guys!!! On the plus side I've received almost everything to finish up my interior, handles, sill plates, rear cab panel carpet, and a radio.

Dang the bad luck. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the interior all finished up.

That sucks! Did you ever check to see if you had metal shavings (or dust) in your oil?

I think I've got the problem solved!!!! I installed a Holley electric fuel pump this morning, got it all plumbed in and wired up. I started it up pulled out of the garage and it idled for about a half hour with no problems, it did run a little hot while it sat there, it was about 100 degrees here today with high humidity? I stopped for while to mow the grass and then I drove it down the road a couple miles. While driving the temp stayed pretty reasonable, 180-185. It is still a mystery of why I couldn't get a mechanical pump to work, but I'm not looking back now, it's time to move forward. I think it still needs the timing fine tuned a little and maybe the carb tweaked on also. Knomadd, the oil was clean even when I changed the break-in oil, it wasn't bad at all either. I guess hind sight is 20/20, but I could have saved myself some $$$ for a distributor and 2 fuel pumps.

Well, it sucks that the mechanical stuff didn't work, but awesome that you got it working with the electric pump setup.

Engines ran for years and years with mechanical pumps, I just don't understand what's going on with this one....

Ok so get a fuel pump block off plate then sell both of the fuel pumps, both push rods and the old distributor and get some of your money back.

I got a fuel pump block off plate this morning and already have it on. Hopefully I can get this stuff posted for sale and recoup some of the money back.

Thanks Scott, it was about to drive me crazy. Tomorrow I'm going to advance the timing a little and see what happens. It seems a little sluggish on takeoff.

Those Gloves were for handling those fancy Tail Lights ...... !!!
