Re: 67 cheby's Dropmember build thread

Question Mike, how are ya gonna put oil in it with no openings in the valve covers and no oil filler tube on the manifold? Oh yeah, are you gonna paint a couple of sets of manifold gaskets to match the paint or what is your plans for the gaskets protruding from the sides of the manifold?

That's a cool alternative! It looks like the heads have been taped off and not painted where the gasket will show therefore bare metal will show where the gaskets do not cover. The gaskets can be trimmed but it is probably not a good thing to do. Maybe you can ask the painter to paint the heads closer to the manifold then with the painted gaskets there will be no bare metal or bare gasket showing.

Re: 67 cheby's Dropmember build thread

hmmm darn sema is end of october untill november 2nd dino's is somewhere around the 14nd and goodguys is shortly after that
thats too long for me to stay over this time as i want do another visit early next year to finish some busness and need to save on my reserved free days a year from my job

you should be able to drive the truck to dino's some time after the sema show from vegas chebby if you can store the truck there untill a few days before the meet fly to vegas and drive back to dino's and then home ........ it will be hairy driving a basicly untested truck trough miles and miles of desert

Re: 67 cheby's Dropmember build thread

I saw you eyeballin Butternut72's project Long Over Due. See that spar he applied to the bed wood? He buffed that out ( . )( . )!! I think that'd be cooler that the clear coat. Also, them stainless fastners can be the shats! I'd for sure use a little anti-sieze where ever you're using them. It dosen't take much to gall the threads, then it's cutting time.
Looking killer so far! LOVE how you're keeping the engine simple Bowtie and not all bling-bling!

just a word of warning that the maple will yellow when the sunlight hits it....but I guess since you're on this whole "gold" kick you won't mind that

As far as the yellowing , do you mean discoloring or what? The clear that I am using from Bed Wood and Parts is supposed to have uv protection in it !

I honestly haven't worked with tiger maple as far as finishing it....most of my work is design, installation, or remodeling....not the actual woodworking....I'd check with the cabinet shop you got it from...

That will definitely help with it having the UV protection...
maple always yellows though as it ages...just like how cherry will darken considerably...
darker finishes hide this but lighter ones show the aging more. All the cabinet finishes I have ever used include UV inhibitors, but even inside the house, the wood ages fairly quickly....much more so when there's a lot of natural light...so a couple days outside at a show in direct sunlight will definitely speed up that natural progress

just might want to take that in mind when looking at the stain colors....knowing it will end up more yellow and a little darker...

Now I understand why you had the polished strips and bolts.

Re: 67 cheby's Dropmember build thread

One more thing...the darker the stain the less the color change will show. I think a stain to match the leather color would be awesome!!! It would pop next to the blue and the stainless strips...
OR
Match the tone of the wood to the lower paint color with a translucent color stain (still shows the grain even though it's similar to a paint)...that would be tight also...and those type translucent stains also hide the yellowing better.

but that's just my humble opinion
