Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"

Joe,
Does your speedometer use a cable or is it electronic? I still need to figure out the speed on the kid's truck. I wonder if there is an electronic speedo for our style trucks/burbs?
How is the a/c working in this heat?

Electronic speedo's were in the 90 and 91 suburbans. I got one by accident a while back.

Mine is cable driven, but as Randy said below... the 90-91 burbs, blazers, and crews had the electronic speedo. Glock used one in Fred. I would guess that it shouldn't be hard to find one locally.

my A/C blows nice and cool...but it wasn't getting very cool in the cab. funny story, It was acting pretty strange, it would get cooler the slower I went. That's opposite of any other vehicle I've ever had. I came home from work one evening and decided to go see JohnC at the hardware store. I put shorts on and away we went. Cruising down the highway, I feel hot air blowing on my legs...WTH?
looked up under the dash on the driver's side. If you remember, this was a non-A/C cab converted to A/C...well guess what? It has a hole on the driver's side where a manual vent is suppose to go so the air blows straight through the cowl
no wonder it wasn't getting cold in there. It's like having a window down. I gotta plug it up today.

I like those woodgrain bezels too. I have two in excellent shape, but with it having the large square hole for the radio, and me not wanting to cut my dash up (again) to fit that factory radio... I guess they are just more stuff to lay around for a spell. Was supposed to have a used radio delivered yesterday for my truck, the correct one with digital time and ETR etc, but it was wrong and I sent it back.

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"

Thanks for the info on the speedo guys. Diggin the woodgrain bezel!
Yep, I remember the Fred truck, that's kinda why I asked. I have looked several times at pullapart....no luck yet, well besides the one someone hacked up with a bfh to get the gas gage out of it.

Glad to hear the a/c is working good. you might want to shove a sock in the heater vent.

That's the dash I'm running. I have 2 bezels like those, but they are both cracked. I'll run one of them for now. One day I'll have to come up and rumage through your parts stash

I'll keep an eye out for you also, Mike.
I wish I could stuff a sock in it. It's almost big enough to stick your head in I think for the time being, I'm just gonna duct tape it....

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"

I would, but I don't wanna melt wires, carpet, or plastic in close proximity....
It is kinda high up also, so I don't know if I can get my drill in there to Tek screw some metal in there. I really don't want to take anything apart again either

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"

If that hole is fairly hidden, just glue a piece of metal in place instead of welding or screwing. That glue is amazing stuff, heck I used it to put in patch panel floors in one of my el caminos years ago. Worked like a champ.
I just really don't know the area in question though, just tossing the idea out there.

Re: My Crew Cab Short Bed Project, AKA "Project Destiny"

Yeah, the stuff we use is awesome. When they demo'd it to us back in the 90's, I did not really have faith in it. But when they glued two pieces of scrap we gave them (was a cut up bedside), they prepped it, glued it and came back the next morning. We put the piece on the frame machine and pulled. It finally did separate, but it ripped the metal, the glue held the two pieces.
I mean, the factory glues most panels it seems, and we do the same with a minimal amount of plug welds. Good stuff and structurally sound.

Yeah, it is completely hidden. It is the fresh air vent above the driver side kick panel.
I'll have to check out the glue. Thanks guys!

Mike says what's on his mind, huh?

I got my stereo installed this weekend. I'll hopefully be swapping in another rear diff with 3:73's shortly (thanks to Scott )
when I do that, I think I'll flip it and swap out my front coils.
And we need to finish up my dash pad too.

Just call them like I see them. I know how those pesky leaks make it hard to cool a cab down.
Glad to hear you have some tunes on board now.

What's up with the dash pad? how did or how are you going to end up doing it? I am in the market for one I can recover.

I don't think John was referring to my air leaks, but the hot air coming from my pie hole

the wife is sewing a vinyl cover for my dash. We didn't pick the best vinyl for the first try. It is thick and very stiff. It has been a challenge for her. I think she about has the cover ready for us to heat and glue to my bad dash pad.
