Re: 56 shop truck build
Yup, you're right, this bumper came off my wife's 58 GMC. We're going to be buying her a new chrome one so I painted hers and put it on mine

Re: 56 shop truck build
Took the truck to my buddy Vince's shop for a much needed alignment yesterday. Drives like a whole different truck now

Re: 56 shop truck build
It's a homo-manufacturer truck....not that's there's anything wrong with it!
So Tim, without going back and catching up, it's still a straight axle, right? Did you just align it or did you install new king pins, install negative caster shims, tapreed roller bearing, etc? I'd love to know just how good these truck CAN drive when they're back to their original spec's, their original "tightness"? EDIT: Nevermind, I went back to post #1. You got right to it, huh? Excellent. What's on my mind is that I already have the CPP disc brake kit and a frame mount manual master cylinder for mine and I keep torturing myself wondering if I should just install a dropped axle and lowering springs (Posie's, I'm a little leery of monoleafs - yeah, I'm a worry wart) and call it good or if I'll be unhapy with the results? I sure wish you could drop over and give me a ride around the block. I guess Manitoba to SoCal and back is a little far though, huh?! lol.

Re: 56 shop truck build
All we had to do was adjust the toe in and out. I already installed the 6 degree caster shims so that was all correct.
The truck rides like it normally would have from new but a bit lower and with better handling. Personally for daily driving, I would just lower it with posies and forget the dropped axle. Mind you So Cal has a lot nicer streets to drive on than we do up here. The truck came with a GMC tail gate on it so I left it as a conversation piece

Re: 56 shop truck build
Just took the truck for a 120km ride and the damn rad popped again. Time to ditch this patched up old rad and get something new. This one is a recorded 65 Chevelle rad that was cored in the 90's but never used until I put it on. It blew up on me last summer and I had it soldered up, and now she popped again. I was happy that it made it all the way home before really leaking. The truck was running right on 200 all the way

Re: 56 shop truck build
Damn Tim, that sucks. Like you said at least it got you home. If you don't have any replacement plans I can vouch for the $145 ebay Champion rad. Still going strong in Phoenix heat with the AC blowing cold.

Re: 56 shop truck build
Jbm: it rides like a straight axle truck. On the rough parts of the highway you feel every little bump but on good pavement, you could drive it all day long. I don't mind it because that's the way I built it but with our crappy highways up here, it's not a long distance cruiser.
sqrlnuts: that's good to know, I was eyeing them p on ebay a couple weeks ago. I have an aftermarket rad I'm going to toss in there in the mean time and see how it does

Re: 56 shop truck build
Well the old rad is being repaired as we speak and my new rad will be here in a couple days. I 'll run the repaired one for the next few days because my daughter is using the truck as her high school graduation ride. Then I'll make up a proper shroud and get the new rad and fan installed next week
