Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap

if you use the temp sensor in the head it will read hotter than on the intake. It isn't bad as long as you know.

Isn't that a more accurate reading if the sensor is in the head?

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap

I'll be using the original location for the temp sender, on drivers side right by the headers, and the same on the pass side for the fan switch.

Installed the electric fuel pump today, runs 4-6 psi. Didn't think it was picture worthy. Also finished shortening the drive shaft. I installed it for now but it will need balancing before I drive more than across the street!!

Finished the battery hold down. I was just getting ready to run the spark plug wires, but on further inspection of them...they are junk. Back to the parts store!!

Started on the gauges...I swapped the original fuel gauge for a new aftermarket GM one and transferred it to the original face plate in the cluster. I like how it turned out except the needle is not as long, but I can still read it. Put on new faces on the gauges. Speedo next!

Not really because it is close to the heat of the combustion chambers where the water temperature is higher than in the rest of the engine. I like to put the sensor in the crossover close to the thermostat. That way I feel that I can tell if the thermostat is working like it should.

Just picked up the correct style plug wires and a fuel line and in line filter and a few other misc. parts. I hope to have more time this long weekend to make some good progress.

Looking great Atommik, getting real close to done.

x2 on the temp sensor being right next to the water neck, I put mine there as well.

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap

So...big day today.
Started out finishing up the fuel line connections.
I got the horns installed (salvaged from a wrecked BMW).
Fit up the radiator and trimmed up the support to get it in place. I still need to make the top support brackets. Ordered rad hoses and fittings for the temp sender and fan switch. On a side note, I wish there was a good old fashioned "speed shop" around here. The local parts stores are good for some things but when you need something simple like npt fittings or a simple sbc temp switch...no luck.

Lastly, I fired up the engine today!! It started pretty well after I remembered to turn on the switch for the elec. fuel pump. No coolant in it so I only ran it for about 10-15 seconds. It's just running thru the headers so it's a little loud, and I have now tightened the headers bolts the rest of the way to stop the exhaust leak you will see in the video. I am so excited to get to this point on my project!!

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap

congrats man, getting so close I bet your just drooling over it. Been there and I'm sure we all have been. The first test drive one of the biggest reliefs ever. Getting it inspected is another, then ironing out the kinks is another, then after a while you'll find things you want to change, then have to fix, ahhhh the list goes on, a project is never really done cause its always gonna be a project!! Is it me or am I the only one missing the video??

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap

Thanks for the compliments guys!!

Spent a little time Monday morning on the truck. I finished modifying the alternator and power steering brackets. I painted the rad support and made the upper and lower mounts for the radiator.

I was having a hard time deciding what to do with the air cleaner cover. I decided the blue color just didn't fit with the rest of the truck, so I two-toned it to match the two-tone on the grill. Came out nice! plan to have a little pin srtiping done to the air cleaner also

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap

Just got back from getting some exhaust tubing, hangers and a muffler. I think that will be Saturday's project. I found some rad. hoses I was able to use after a little trimming. Hoping to install the heater tomorrow at lunchtime so I can fill the coolant and let the truck run a little.
