Re: Lost My 65
Tacked on Captainfab's axle perches.
Bolted them up, tightly, then tacked them permanently. I'll pull it back out tomorrow to weld them up completely. The axle is out of a 65, so it looks like I'll be able to use the track bar too. . .

Re: Lost My 65
Having things apart, I found one of my oil leaks. Someone at one time looks to have used a chisel or something to install the cam plug. But then later when a new one got installed, those chisel marks actually damaged the inner surface of the cam plug hole.
You can even see how those chisel marks scraped the edge of the cam hole plug. There's four on the plug which align perfectly with the chisel marks on the cam hole. . .

Re: Lost My 65
The question I have now is, how do I remove those bumps on the inner surface of the cam shaft hole?
Maybe a small three or four stone hone?

Re: Lost My 65
I think this 2" grinding wheel might be the best solution.
I only need to just smooth the very outer edge. The cam plug actually sits a bit behind the chisel bump. It's just when inserting the plug that the plug gets that scratch in it. So if i remove the bump from the outer rim, I think it'll seal up ok. . .

It sounds good to me.
I have never had to deal with the stuff like you are with the cam. It sounds like you are going at it with the right ideas.

Re: Lost My 65
Talking with a guy at work today, I think we came up with a good idea.
Lightly grind the old plug I removed, drill a hole in the center of it, Wipe some grease around the outer edge of the plug, and then slide it back against the cam. Then use the 2" grinding stone I mention above. Wipe down. Remove plug. Wipe again. Install new plug.

Re: Lost My 65
Surprisingly nice day today, so I
went to the local Pick-N-Pull to look for a driveshaft. Every stupid one destroyed. I looked at 40 to 50 vehicles. All destroyed from forklifts. Why the heck advertise them for 37.99 if you're going to destroy them?! Jerks

Re: Lost My 65
Are there not any local machine shops or such that can shorten or build a driveshaft? I guess I'm spoiled up here.

Re: Lost My 65
The shaft in my 65 on a 62 frame was from my longbed 65. It was a two piece. I had it shortened when I built my 65 back up on the 62 frame.
I didn't want to have it shortened again for the th350. It would have ended up being roughly two 2' pieces with a carrier bearing. So I started watching Craigslist for something close or longer than what I needed. After a few dead ends with CL and going out to the wrecking yard and looking under 40+ vehicles, I figured I'd burnt up enough of my time. I have Builders needing me to finish up house plans. A little over $200 shipped for a brand new driveshaft with u-joints and yoke ain't a bad deal. Especially if I was going to pay more than that to have one made. Besides, if Southwest Speedway's shaft works out no hassle, I think it'll be a nice source for others needing a new shaft.

Re: Lost My 65
I haven't been very motivated lately because of the cold.
Hacked in an old cast-iron wood stove I got for free. Sit down and take a break next to a nice warm stove. :-)

Boy that looks like an oldie.
If you have uninsulated pipe outside, keep an eye on it for creasote buildup.

Re: Lost My 65
Having a warm stove motivated me to button up a couple oil leaks I found.
Got help for fixing the cam plug leak here: http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=686246 Got help with the intake manifold leaks around the bolts here : http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=510440 Started up today to check my work. The above leaks are fixed. I really wanted to make sure, so I ran it quite some time. Let it warm up real good and revved it up really high for a good duration. And then I found another leak. It's blowing out around the dipstick when I get the rpm's way up. So searching these forums I found this : http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=444335

Re: Lost My 65
Revving an unloaded engine is not at all advised.
Just saying.. "Blow by" at high RPMs is indicative of rings seating improperly. . IMHO. . There is more going on than high crank case pressure going on.

Re: Lost My 65
After doing much research in these forums, I ordered a Lokar Dipstick. Fit very nicely. Started the engine again to make double sure I got all my leaks sealed up.
All good. Now I can finally install the Th350.

Re: Lost My 65
Hooked up my Lokar AutoTranny Dipstick.
Installed a Moroso Th350 pan gasket. Slid the Torque Converter on (dbl clunk), and then bolted the tranny up. Tomorrow I hope to route the cooler lines, and mock up the shifter linkage.

I modified 67-72 linkage to work with my 62 frame.
.. . Here's what I ended up doing. . . Didn't use this. .

Re: Lost My 65
Hope that the T350 and 12bolt swap all comes together well for you. I really enjoyed reading this thread as you pursued your old truck. I almost wished that you hadn't posted the updated pics at the beginning so that I could have stayed in suspense, ha. Your truck has the perfect stance. I'm partial to the squarebodies, having grown up riding in family Suburbans from that era. But your truck sits just right and makes the proportions of the sixties body come together.
