Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
Wish i could really injoy it. The hole family is sick. I had to take day off work. I did manage to sneek it to the exhaust shop down some back roads. Holy moly it is pricy to have it done. They are going to charge me 450 for the hole thing. That is no chrome tips and 2 1/4 inch pipe with a H pipe and duels the hole way. It is a tiny little mexican shop too. Think i am getting screwed..... But tha is the only place i could drive it to. It had better look good for that money.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
I think that price might be okay compared to what others have said on the forum....I paid $1,100 for true dual pipes starting after the headers with 2 magnaflow mufflers and tips (but my tips were $400).
So $450 sounds pretty good to me! :-)

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
How long does it take for flowmasters to breakin? Cause mine sound like compleat crap. They sound like glass packs. They sound good idle but if i get on it they sound like absoulte dog crap. And the crap ass place did not install the H pipe like i asked him to. Very dissapointed. I didnt even get tips.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
That blows. As far as them breaking in, they dont. They will always sound that way. Alot of folks end up really not liking flow masters at all. magnaflows or flow master 50/70 series seem to be the way to go.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
An H pipe might tone it done some. Since Flows use baffled chambers, there should be no "break in". If it sounds like crap, you better consider another muffler.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
i discovered on my '01 SS that magnaflow mufflers sound MUCH better on LS engines than flowmaster. on my stock 5.3 Z71 i have a flowmaster and it does sound good. but something about these engines with headers an no cats makes the flows sound aweful.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
Do you have full tail pipes? That really toned down the Flowmaster's on my cars vs. turn downs at the rear axle.
An H-pipe will knock some dB off and build a little more power too. The 40 series mufflers are pretty noisy no matter what though. My neighbors hated me when I had them on my car. They make a 50-series SUV performance muffler that sounds good and is much quieter than the 40-series and a little quieter than the standard 50-series. I put them on my Malibu and really like them. Still sound like Flowmaster's just not obnoxious.

Would pipe diamiter make a diff it is only 2 1/4 pipe. I had a 68 gmc with 40s and it did not sound any thing like these do. I will see about a h pipe. Then decied if i can live with it.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
Glad you got it all in....
I hate to say it (and this is just my opinion) but I'm thinking 2.5" pipes might have been a little better choice? I'm guessing that might also have something to do with the glasspak sound? 2.25" pipes would be probably be OK for a 5.3.... but you've got the 6.0 and it needs to breath more. An H would be a good addition, but I think an X would be better at changing (mellowing) the tone some. I'm going with turbo mufflers because I've already gone the flowmaster route (was also a 6.0) before and pulled them out about 10mi and 2 days later. Pulled the flows and the rear/side exit pipes, added a 3" tru-x pipe (to a 2.5" system) and dumped the exhaust over the rear axle. Sound much better (quieter and mellower) the the longer "true dual" flow40's system it had. That said...it would still whoooopppowww like glasspaks on big rev ups. Its a bit of trial an error when you deviate from stock. I'm having issues with brake lines, fuel lines, and other things right now...because everything isn't stock, or in the stock location. My new/used parts cabinet is running out (due to last minute changes) of room. What did you do for the PCV, breather, brake booster, and ? Also, did you hook up a MAP sensor to the MSD box or no?

Are you sure they put real Flowmaster mufflers on? A co-worker thought he was getting Flowmaster's on his Suburban and got a generic made in china knock off instead that didn't sound good at all. Looks the same on the outside but doesn't sound the same. The real thing will have their logo embossed into the case.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
I agree with the others. Flows with no cats on a LS is not good. I had a flow 40 on my 2000 Silverado with cats and it sounded good, but at highway speeds droned bad. Also in my experience smaller pipe seems to make the make the exhaust pop more. Glad the motor is in and running though!

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
Thanks everyone. Had no idea this many people looked at my little prodject.....Hmmm. Any ways... I went to the good exhaust and had 3.5 inch slant cut tips and a H pipe installed. It sertinly helped quit a bit. I it used to take a few seconds cranking with key to fire now it is almost as good as it was with no exhaust on it. Makes horible glass pack noise tons less. I am happyER now with it. I will leave exhaust alone tell i pick headers and or someone starts to sell headers for mine.

The map sensor i have used it for the first few times i drove it and on way home today and dont really see a dif. I have the 3rd chip in mine right now. Have not had time to map a curve yet. Really want to. With it idleing i had comp hooked to box and the timing was at like 27 degres. That is a bunch for me. But did not see a differance in way it ran.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
What would yall think would be the best timing curve? I have read threw the msd tech web site. One of the msd techs told a guy to set one dot at 12-14 then the last one at 30 and leave the map disconnected. And try from there. Does that sound like a good plan?

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
What effect should my cam have on idle vaccum? I know it will be less but will it make the neadle move around some? Only a small dit like 1-2 notches. No abnormal noises just neadle bounc. It may be the overlap but never had a aftermarket cam befor...

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
does it still bounce when you give it a little more gas....say like a fast idle of 1200-1500 rpm?
I would think you'd need the MAP for the street but not at the track....to take advantage of idle and cruise situations where it would take a bit more timing. I'll try to watch the Intercepter gauge in the SS and see what the efi has it at idle. I think I've seen 30+'s and maybe even 40+'s for advance * at cruise and/or coast?

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
Ya it does. Did not see how hi it takes to stop the bounc but it did speed up. Also the hole truck shakes when the converter is locked up under load. Even at 65 if i give it any gas it shakes. But on cost it is smooth. My old 350 did same if i luged it really hard like 40 mph in overdrive with converter locked. May be a timing issue but i dont know. Carb is still not right so i dont really know where to start.

It obviously unlocks when you step on the brakes or it would stall out when you came to a stop so there is an issue with the TV cable adjustment or something else in the TV cable / TCC system not working right that doesn't sense when the engine is under load to release the converter lock up function.

Re: 85 burb meets 6.0 lq4
Cool build. The price on the exhaust sounds good to me. We get hosed up here. I paid $650 for headers back, h-pipe and out the sides in the stock rear location with 2.5" pipe. And I supplied the mufflers. 50 series flowmasters and I love the mellow sound with headers and the h-pipe.
Do you have a wide band O2 sensor for tuning? It sure makes it a lot easier, whether you're using a carb or fuel injection. Otherwise you're going to have to 'read the plugs.' That timing sounds about right at idle to me. I'm mid 20's at idle, low 40's at cruise and coast. I really love the computer controlled timing. You can do whatever you want without compromise. Good luck with the tuning.
