Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

I have most of the gas filler done now. It went a little different than I had planned, but ended up just how I wanted it. Just need to put a gasket in for the holes in the bed, add the vent hose, drill some holes for the cover to mount to the inner bed wall then finish it off with a little body work. Done.

Something different than the usual and I like how it looks. Sorta stock, but not quite.

I cut the hole in the cover and the tube fit up so well, and was still able to be installed in the hole that I decided to weld it. I had tried using a pipe clamp to hold the tube to the bed wall then install the cover over it, but that wouldn't work because the cover needed to both fit under the bed edge and go over the top of the fill tube. So I don't need to clamp it to the bed wall now.

Installed.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

New SPID

I scanned a replacement sticker, then started a new doc trying to fit the blanks like the original, then found the option codes for all of the things I have added over the years. This isn't the final draft, there will probably be a few changes yet with interior color, maybe some trim codes, things like that. I just printed the sticker page, put it back in and printed the typing and it matched up real good to the original. For the final print, I'll tape the real sticker in the same spot and hope it goes through the printer ok.

Body shop will be rolling it into the booth today. They swear it will get sprayed before the weekend. I'm ordering replacement rubber parts that I didn't already have. If I can get the radiator support sprayed this weekend, We'll mount the fenders and hood up next week and hope for booth time ASAP afterwards.

Original spid posted below.

Looking good! I wanted to do a stake pocket fill hole on my Longhorn but the camper I'm getting kills that idea because it sits over the bed sides.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Worked on welding up the rust holes by the tailgate. I know I can't make it perfect, but I can at least close them up and once the liner is sprayed in it, it'll look good enough for me. The rear of the floor is pounded in pretty good, so it was never going to be pretty. The worst part was all the grinding. About as much fun as sanding, but louder. Still need to grind the front floor repairs yet. Still need to fix the driverside floor edge in front of the wheel well and one more hole in the back (see below) and possibly a few more pin holes. All the bare metal areas in the picks had weld repairs done. Still need to drill the holes for the gas filler mount. That's about it for repairs and fabrication.

Should be able to finish it up this week and clean up the wheel well areas, etc and re-prime with epoxy. Then it will be ready for the body shop.

Speaking of the body shop, they started taping it yesterday, probably paint it this next week. So I need to get the radiator support sprayed soon so we can mount up the fenders and hood afterwards for outside color. Busy, busy, busy. But it's going to be great in a few weeks.

the repair came out great! I am sure you're super excited!!!

It's not my truck and I just started following the build less than a year ago and I still am super excited to see it in color...probably because I can tell how much it means to you from your posts about it and all the hard work!!!

Truck might be in the booth tomorrow when I get home from work. Too hot today, nearly 100 again, but cooling down to low 70's tomorrow. And our weather report is brought to you by...

Zurich Insurance, we just do it better than all those other large international conglomerates.

Awesome! Can you even sleep well right now? I know with my blazer it felt like Christmas the night before the day we were shooting color....and I only had that a few months and was planning to sell it when complete...nothing close to the attachment you have to have with this truck!

Too busy lately. At another softball double header tonight 75 miles from home.

edit, just got home and I'll sleep good. It's been forever waiting for paint, another day or week, no biggie.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build

Good news/bad news. Of course I'll start with the good. Turns out that while I was watching my youngest play softball, my truck had been sprayed inside and firewall.

The color in the pics is just a little bluer than what it really is. It actually has a tinge of green to make it turquoise but it just won't come out in the pics. In any case, I love the color and I'm very happy with my choice.

Then the bad news, which really isn't that bad, but anyway, the body shop got a bunch of work in and probably won't get to spray the outside of the front half next week. I'll need more patience.

Get off the net and go sand something.

Thanks.

The plan as of now:
Spray the radiator support, inner fenders, etc. this weekend.
Roll the truck home after that to work on while I wait my turn in the booth.

Simple plan.

So I spent the evening sanding all of the underhood parts that will be black. My arms are tired and I have to do one more inner fender. I plan on cleaning up the areas of the bed I repaired and around the wheel tubs so they are ready for epoxy primer, along with the bottom side of the inner fenders and the hood latch/grill support parts.

After that sets up I'll mix some high build primer to shoot the support and inners for a smoother finish. Hopefully I can get it all in black in the next couple days. Did I mention before that I hate sanding?

Sprayed some epoxy primer on the hood latch parts and bottoms of the inner fenders. I didn't know I hadn't sprayed them before. Brain fart.

Very nice! Sorry for the delay...but it won't be long now...and gives you more time on the bed, right?

So are you going to spray all the black? Going gloss or the factory satin color?
