Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well I got the pass side done...for some reason it went a little easier than the 1st 4 did....
I'm gonna straighten the wiring up but 1st I've got to get some more wire separator clamps...thatll make it look some better...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I did some measuring and found what I think could have been some of the issues I was having...there is about .050 difference in the od of the wires...that makes it harder in the stripper/clamp and getting it in the plug boot...not to mention with a od range of .420-.470 and trying to get it in a .200 hole in the boot..
Like trying to cram 10lbs of crap in a 2lb sack...
They sell the same boot for 10mm and 8mm wires...if I'd gone with 8mm it probably would have went much smoother...I did try the windex..it helped in the stripper part but not on the boot install...

Every little bit helps, but it's looking good.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

A while back I showed a pic of something that I would never have thought they would have back in the 50s
A 4wd in/out indicator light and switch..I tested the switch and never could get a good reading with a meter..so in trying to keep as much originality that I can ,I tried to salvage the switch..
It was crimped together so I used a screwdriver and pried it apart..unbelievably clean on the inside..
And the problem was easily seen...the contact tab and spring was out of the holder...I sanded the contacts and put it back together..works flawless now...

Nice save. My first car was a 77 Scout. I can still see the 4 WHEEL DRIVE dash light in my mind. Good stuff.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

After some beadblasting on the shift indicator switch, it uncovered this sweet logo.."old school" delco remy..

After some googling I found a part number for this switch...delco Remy 1997915 d853..
Gm used this as a brake light switch in the 50s...and theres still some nos one out there...

And some IH logo bolts

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Another project off the list...the inner fender had a hump in the lower portion where the old steering box crossed over the top of the frame...the sharpie mark is about where the hump center needs to be..
.with the new steering the location moved forward a few inches...so I cut out a section of the panel and moved the hump forward about 1-1/2"...had to cut it in 5 pieces to work around the rib..i shortened the rib a inch or so and fabbed a filler for one spot...I'll blast it ,epoxy, and filler and it'll be good with painting and undercoating
