1957 GMC Suburban Pickup
I just finished paying for this hidden gem - tucked away on a farm in Nebraska, this original untouched and verifiably real (not cloned) 1957 Suburban Pickup is originally from Missouri and is a 2 owner truck. Factory 347 Pontiac V8 w/ Hydramatic auto trans. Estimated total production for 1957 was fewer than 400 of these fiberglass bed clad pickups. The Suburbans were GMC's answer to the Cameo but unlike Chevrolet who committed to making its Cameo a true member of the family with its own model designation and higher production, GMC never cared too much for the idea and never made a new model for the Suburbans since it never intended to make many in the first place. It is believed by some that GMC simply committed to ordering a fixed number of fiberglass bedsides from the struggling Corvette plant where they were made as more of a favor to GM than anything and to keep parity with Chevrolet; ordering 300 to 400 sets of the bedsides each of the 4 years and simply adding them at random to trucks headed down the line. Anyway, should prove to be a worthwhile challenge; this truck is not in good shape at all - but I get a dry nearly rust-free Wyoming 56 BW cab and rust free matching doors with the truck for an added 500.00 bones, so I will plan to use this instead of building the rotted cab it has. Same for several other areas - not sure how good the steel portion of the box is yet and I already know the tailgate is shot too. I have wanted a real one of these since I was 13 yrs old and despite the poor condition you sometimes get when buying an unrestored truck, It will be the most highly prized truck in my fleet when completely restored.....

Re: Show us your projects
This is an on going project for my wife. To record, the 1st 2012 vw beetle bagged in the states. Its been featured by several online automotive sites and also got a little coverage in Performance VW magazine...We have a new look planned for it for the 2013 show season.
Now that she is happy I finally picked up my next project. A 53 Chevy, yes it will be bagged also. |

Re: Show us your projects
Been focusing on the bed recently, since the money for the more expensive stuff is still nonexistent. Decided before starting that the underside would be the new top side, since it was in better condition... What we started with on the left and the refinished product on the right, after pressure washing, belt sanding, bleaching, hand sanding and six coats of polyurethane... The darkened ends will be covered by metal trim, as will the bolt holes on either side. Not perfect, but that was never the intention... Now time to clean up those metal strips!

Re: Show us your projects
LOL! Thats the main reason I had to have it! My wife thinks I'm nuts, especially when I drove it home Wednesday at lunch. "which neighbor bought Mater" is how the conversation started. After dinner last night I scrubbed the crud off for 3 hours and she says " when are you going to paint it?" I said " It's supposed to look like that" She says " you better never wash my car again" lmao!

Re: Show us your projects
Here it is 5 days after purchasing it, inbetween working 50 hour weeks and having Family from sanDiego here over the weekend. I have to get the "stuff that looks good" done so I can keep the steam rolling!

Re: Show us your projects
Trucks look great guys, keep the pics coming!
I got my rear bumper on my 49, finished up my hood with one last primer coat and wet sand. Masked off some flames since I got a blue one shade different to avoid needing it to be perfect... Should be cool and ready for clear by the weekend. Pics soon |

Re: Show us your projects
Truck looks like an awesome start! With some effort maybe only a few weeks away from looking like the one on the trailer!
Some pics of mine with flames in ghost style underway... Bumper is temporarily held on with regular bolts, carriage bolts go in today along with blue that is one-two shades different for flames and hood. |
