Re: My 52 GMC Build

Got the door poppers all built. The solenoids are mounted to the lower access panel of the door for easy service and no holes in the door. Short vid below pic.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Good stuff. I like the modern aspect of the poppers but not keen on shaved handles. Are you shaving them or just adding poppers?

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Today was a great day!! I got the door windows installed and door poppers in. It all went together as smooth as frog snot.
The last 2 pics show the popper installation with the cables.
Then a vid of the poppers in action.

Well I have been working on the electrical panel plate. It's now ready to get mounted to the fire wall. I have 10 relays and 20 circuits.

Great work on the electrical panel. Nice layout and very clean! Those poppers are sweet. Kind of makes me want to put some in my 40 Ford.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

I need to learn a lot about this stuff. Why use relays in place of fuses? If a relay is a switch, what is the difference in powering a box full of fuses with one switch(key switch) or using a bunch of relays with fuse links? I need some quick education. I'm googling what I can but there is nothing specific to auto, or explanations of what and why? I'm kinda dude that needs to know why I'm doing something. Any of your help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

So a relay powers another circuit from an existing circuit. Why not just have a separate circuit for what ever that relay is running with a fuse for it? Is this to reduce the amount of fused circuits?

Is this why some vehicles have two fuse boxes? Fuses protecting relayed circuits?

Thanks

Re: My 52 GMC Build

AD, My guess is there are relays for fuel pump, headlights, efan, door poppers, perhaps some air ride stuff, can't recall which set up hes using.

Chance, imagine a starter on how it works. There is a bigger portion that turns the engine over and on top of that big unit is a little unit. The little unit is a solenoid and that has a big wire going into the starter itself cause it requires a ton of cranking power. So with the turn of a key you can trigger the solenoid to turn the big boy. Rather than having a 2gauge wire coming up into your ignition, you can run 10g wire (smaller) down to a solenoid. that is how relays work. They let a small circuit run directly off the battery. Like an efan which requires like 20-30amp or something off top of my head, which is a lot, those run off a fuse and a relay, there needs to be a fuse if there is a circuit and if the circuit requires a lot of juice, its often best to add a relay. like headlights, they run off the light switch which is fused, but run better with relays added to them.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

I understand the solenoid. So there are different size relays(amperage)? Lowers, I'm sorry to beat your thread like this. I'm trying desperately to wrap my brain around this. I know nothing besides bare basics of auto wiring. Everything besides relays, haha. Which I'm getting the idea that they are an important an necessary part of the system. I've never had a relay go bad, never even had to think about a relay, I'm ashamed to say, I guess.

So say I want to wire in an e-fan. How would I use the relay or wire this setup up using a relay I should say? Thanks for the help.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Ok, lol...I got all nervous when I seen all those relays. I you tubed my butt off and got a general idea of it and how to wire them. As usual, I'm a long ways away from this in my build but the wiring is one of my largest concerns and gets me worried. I learned a lot tonight and my kind is at ease for now.

Thanks Diesel I moved the stuff around on the panel quite a bit before I found what I wanted. You could always add poppers with your handles.
