Not true. I had a high school friend that had a 70 SS chevelle with a 350. Used to pull up next to him in my Dad's new 4-door Delta 88 with a 455 and smoke his butt. He hated loosing to the family car.

From chevelle.com

"The 350 was available in the SS, but there should not be any 350 emblems on the fenders, just SS.
The only engine emblems that came on an SS was the 396 and 454. All small block and 402 cars just had a plain SS on the fenders.
The only way to tell if the car came with a 350 is to find the build sheet, on a 70 the VIN wont tell you , it will only tell you if the car came with a v8 or a 6cyl. But you can check it against the engine code, if the last 6 digits of the vin are on the block, then you have the original engine.
But you will still need the build sheet to tell if it's an SS or not."

What you say about the smallblock is true for 71 & 72 Chevelles. No small block was available in 1970. Your correct on the build sheet for 70.

Re: Vintage picture thread

My first car the day I brought it home..
Cost me $250 in 1976, those days are gone.

Top pic was how it looked..
And the bottom two were when it was almost complete.
Just had to put on the rally wheels and the trim.
Paint would be another year..

The hood was a real steel 69 Camaro hood I found at a local dealership.
Someone had ordered it years before, and never came to pay.
They still had it in their stockroom, and were anxious to get rid of it, as it was getting in the way...
It had a little wear and a small ding so I got it for $75 dollars

Those were the days before parts were readily available..
And it took me over a year of scrounging to find the rest of the parts I needed.
But at least when you did find parts, they weren't a kings ransom.

Went into a junkyard in Tonawanda N.Y. and found a '68 Tic-Tock-Tach, just laying on the seat of a 1965 Dart... Cost.. $25 big ones.

Won't even get into the rust issues with a Northern car..
Salt's a killer.
I snapped the head off every body bolt, taking it apart.

Somehow, I miss it all.

J.

It is an original period photo, but is a brochure error of a combination that was not available from the factory.

It is fairly common to take whatever vehicles are available and update them to represent something else for the purposes of the sales literature. Someone wasn't paying very close attention here.

By the way - one of my responsibilities in my previous job was to review all the advertising literature and make sure it is accurate and any claims are substantiable. Hopefully I would have caught this....

Re: Vintage picture thread

Since this thread was getting a little stale here is my 72 Custom Deluxe 10 Suburban (400, TH400 and dual A/C) in 83. This was day two of my ownership, day one involved a new battery and five brand new L78-15 radials. Day four found us back at the tire store for a road hazard warranty tire replacement (ran over something at the lake). Going to have to dig around and see if I can find any pictures of my 72 Vega panel truck or 70 Chevelle Malibu (HS ride).

This my dad, brothers, and my 69 CST blazer on a hunting trip in the adirondack mountains back in 1981. I wasn't into vintage trucks back then, I wish I had that blazer now!

Here's one the that the original owner sent me when I asked if he had any. He believes it is from around 1973. You just make out the extra gas tanks he installed in the step. I wish I had the camper.

Re: Vintage picture thread

I like old Gas/Service Station pics for screen savers....In my web search I found this one....Mid 70's Exxon....What really caught me was the fact that in '84, I had a Comet very much like the one in this pic and now I have a '72 Chevrolet Custom Camper, pretty close to the GMC in the pic......

OMG Tim, I think you and my forklift mechanic went to creative numbers school together... he just sent an invoice for $2230.35 for my brake repair. It claims he took 18.4 hours and 8 pairs of shoes, 6 wheel cylinders, 4 inner grease seals, 3 inner bearings, 2 master cylinders and 10 gallons of 90 wt oil to do the brakes on two wheels. Oh I forgot 2 gallons of brake fluid.....

Recalculating.

BTW, can someone make that attachment in post #503 show up as a picture. the post doesn't make since without the pic of the Corvette with the camper. Of course the pic doesn't make since "with" the Corvette with the picture.
