Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

22 Pages of Highlanders and not one SPID documented 4x4 pickup!! I thought for sure one would pop up in this thread. Sill haven't seen any literature that says you couldn't order a Highlander trim or Promo package on a 4x4, but there doesn't seem to be any out there!
I posted mine way back on one of the first couple pages but it was still under construction at that point. its 99% complete now.

Its a Highlander "tribute" or "clone" 1972 Chevy K10 SWB Fleetside. Originally a low optioned 4x4 Custom/10 that I restored to be a Custom Deluxe Highlander. Possibly something they never built??? Great thread and great info here. Is anyone sitting on a sneaky original 4x4 highlander????

Whether one could get a highlander 4x4 or not (and I believe you are correct, everything I've read implies an option for C's only) - that is one BEAUTIFUL k10. Thanks for sharing the updated pics Nick!

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I'd say Cheyenne as well. Not a lot of people even know what the highlander was. Being that it is just a spid code and most people when rebuilding their trucks don't actually keep the highlander motif, most trucks aren't even equipped with the full Package after 40 years. It's nice to see them but most people wouldn't pay any more for it where Cheyenne and super are badged and marked as such. So will go for a little more.

Your truck is coming along nicely!

As far as factory goes, I too hoped a 4x4 pickup would have popped up by now. The factory sales book is very specific about the trim upgrade being available on C10-30 Fleetsides. If they offered it on K10-20 trucks it should say so here. That is, as I said before, not to say it couldn't be special ordered or that dealer trim swaps didn't happen. Unfortunately as they age, more trucks are lost to time. But on the other hand the knowledge circle is getting greater every day identifying and sometimes saving these one at a time. So there is still hope at finding a true factory 4x4 Highlander pickup.

But if you have to "have" a factory 4x4 Highlander you might start looking for a Blazer to go with your pickup.
They are coded:
Blazer CST Z84 mandatory option
Avocado 680
Blue 677
Gray 671
Orange 686

I hope this helps establish the rule for no 4 wheel drive highlanders. I would like to see the exception to the rule.

I purchased a colors and trim book the other day regarding gmc trucks. It has a page describing the plaid interior and how it may be ordered. See the attached picture for reference. This book may help clear up or confirm some other details regarding highlanders but this was one issue that was clear to me.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I think SSTim is very aware that the literature says Highlanders were only available on 4 x2 pickups etc. You weren't supposed to be able to order a 427 in a 1969 Camaro either but we all know about the COPO Camaros. Using the same COPO logic what's to say someone with connections couldn't have ordered a COPO 4 x 4 Highlander ?

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I know many K5's were 4x4 and had the plaid interiors? Were these not highlanders or are we talking no 4x4 in pickup version only? Matt

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Here is my 72 I picked up yesterday. It's a trim truck, no promo code. I had to save it. The seat was sold out of the truck before I got to it. It was going to be parted out and used to fix a short bed truck. I'll get some better pics later. The iPhone will only let me post one pic at a time.

Here is my Spid label. It's rained so hard I haven't even unloaded the truck but I did snap this pic with the phone.

My Spid reads Sp. Promotion Pac. B.....
Are the "prom pacs A-B-C" more rare than just getting the options?
Worth more?

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I was looking thru a friends junk yard last weekend and saw this too. I couldn't get around to the other side to look at the label but it doesn't have factory air. I'll try again next time I'm there if it ever dries up. It does have the dual tanks I'm hoping I can talk him out of. The tank is probably junk by now though.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Were Dual tanks a Highlander option? I didn't think so, Correct me if I'm wrong. I would love it to be because mine has them and I was going to illiminate them.... I'm learning a lot about Highlanders. Thanks one and all!

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

not necessarily worth more Frenchy (compared to a similar plaid truck without a package order that had similar RPOs ordered separately anyway), just a nice liitle package of doo dads to have. A was lowest and C was highest on the totem pole as far as options included. I think yours is the only original highlander that underwent a complete color change, to include changing to the appropriate new plaid color also. Nice!

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Well, I do have a plaid truck, now, either because of or thanks to this thread. I am not sure whether to thank this thread or blame it. This truck has been posted on here several times over the past few years by the previous previous owner and by guys who saw it on eBay a couple weeks back. It was close to home so I went to look at it just to see the Highlander package and to see the engine compartment for reference. The dang thing got under my skin and I couldn't resist bringing it home. I have a few things to do on the red '70 but I will be putting it up for sale when warmer weather and the buying season get here.

I'm not sure what options make a truck a Highlander, but this one for sale on Craigslist has plaid interior. http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5456820617.html

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

That's too cool. Of course I'm partial to white exterior with blue plaid interior highlanders... Ha. You have there a great example of a non-package (i.e. just trim) highlander C10. And a Janesville one at that! (Notice the centered "Deluxe" badge - only Janesville did that). It should have chrome hub caps (PO3 on the SPID). About as basic as one could order a Custom Deluxe WITH plaid. No power brakes, no a/c. Great find! Looks to be nice shape too.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Pretty awesome to see what these old codes mean and what the trucks actually looked like. My uncle still has his orange plaid highlander. It's a custom deluxe too. He won't sell it to me nor does it run anymore.

My father had a 72 in the green with the plaid and the white panels. I was dumb at 18 when he offered it to me. When I went back to ask for it he had sold it.

Good stuff man. My 72 is the light yellow also known as Grapefruit Yellow. A rare color from my understanding.
