Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

thanks everyone! It was a happy moment.

I know I am not the only one in the same situation: started a big project as a teenage enthusiast then education, career, marriage, house, kids came along. Glad my parents have a large yard and tolerance or I would have been forced to sell it as a failed project basket case decades ago.

Stick with your projects people!

I once read a thread on here 'what would you change' or some similar title, It has some good wisdom for people starting a project, an accumulation of stories like my 2nd paragraph here. It should be a sticky for the entire site! Can anyone find that?

Well said leegreen. I got my truck in '79 just like you and finally got it on the road a couple years ago. It would have been much easier to just buy a finished truck, but for me it had to be that particular one. It was supposed to be my "high school hauler" and it has become my "retirement ride". I feel like I'm in high school every time I drive it.

I hope to do the same with mine. I bought mine in 1997 and only drove it home that day. Never driven since. Just in pieces. Ive moved it between multiple houses over the years. But am now at the point where I am starting to get time to work on it.

I told my parents, it was only going to take 2 years. Haha, they still joke about that.

Started to make up an air cleaner from an old propane heater housing.

Still rough, and no paint yet but I got the top looking ok.

Next I have to figure out something for the bottom.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

Just completed the 2nd to last part of the truck maintance needed to feel comfortable driving it.
Changed the gear oil in the M21 trans. Also replaced all the shift linkage bushings and spring clips. Shifts much better.
Tomorrow its off to get 4 new tires installed.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

I finally got 4 new tires today. The fronts were bought in April 2003 and the rears were so old there was no date code. I also put a coolant shut off valve in the heater line so I didnt cook my self on our 95 deg + days. I now think she's ready for some road miles in the next few months.

Met Robert ( mr 48 chevy) as he was taking pictures of my truck. Then took my wife out for a ride. First time she's been in the truck in about 8 years. Over all, a fun weekend.

Drove mine to post office, grocery and gas station. Doesn't sound like much but the culmination of 5 decades + of effort!! Even went to a little show last week. The honks and waves were well worth the effort!

You know what's funny, I recently got a new daily driver, a 2005 Pontiac SunFire that replaced my low life Dodge Caravan and it's fired me up. I am currently working my 5 minute a day plan on the Sunfire and can see me continuing it on the truck!

That is funny Brian. Yet another project you gotta do BEFORE you get to your actual project. I have the same problem. Haha
Hope you can get'er done quick and move onto the truck. Post up some pics.
We set a heat record in Calgary yesterday. 34C. 93.2F. That's hot for here at this time of the year.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

Drove about an hour to a show in Gaston,OR on Saturday “The Wapato Showdown”. It was a nice country drive. There were 400-500 cars that showed up.

Took my daughter and she was really excited by the trophy we brought home, it’s almost 5’ tall.
