Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Tackled the last Unknown area of my cab--- I chipped out all the seam sealer around the roof and drip edge, holding my breath expecting to find rust holes all the way.
To my relief, I found a couple spots of rust scale but no serious rust or rust thru.

After carefully cleaning all the sealer out, I wire brushed the area, then taped off the drip edge area and painted it with a rust encapsulator. Later, this area, as well as the rest of the cab will get a coat of epoxy primer, then new sealer.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Just mounted my tires to some newly refinished rally wheels today (which I sanded and painted last weekend). Now if I could only find some GMC stickers for them lol.

BTW, I parked like a jackass in the first pic because I threw a belt and started to overheat so I pulled over.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

My current project involves a rust free 78k mile 70 Longhorn 400 BB California donor truck.Since the bed is pretty rough and I am not a big fan of the 8 1/2' beds and 3/4 tons in general, I am pulling the cab, clip and engine and installing it on a 69 swb frame. I also have a 71 12/ ton lwb frame. Last week I pulled the front crossmemebers from both frames. Today I got the 71 disc front crossmember under the 69 swb frame and stabbed a few bolts in it. I also pulled the cover on the 71 5 lug rear that is still under the lwb frame and it is a 3.73 open axle. There was a lot of sludge when I pulled the pan. I plan to install new axles and bearings butt I hope the axles arent ruined! I also am pieceing together a swb stepside frame for the truck. I have a nice pair of fenders on a 68 lwb bed. I flipped the bed over and sprayed all of the bolts attaching the fenders to the bed with penetrating oil. I will also be pulling the rear crossmember and possibly the front bed panel. I also have a rough 67 swb stepside bed. THe only thing I am using off it is the steps. I have a set of really nice 55-66 bed sides. I compared them to the 67 bed sides and they are identical except for the location of the fender attachment hole. I paln to take measurements from the 67 bed and drill new holes in the 55-66 bedsides to attach the fenders from the 68 bed. THen weld up the old holes. WHEW!!!

I bought a pair of rallys with GMC caps earlier this week, but I didn't pay much attention to the condition of the caps. I will check tomorrow and let you know waht shape they are in.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I have just been driving mine. That is nice after having not been able to for so long. I am getting ready to put it in flat black. Not my first choice, but it will put it in one color and I can't afford to finish it as yet.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Drove it to to the hardware store this morning. It was fun seeing the heads turn. It is just an old blue beater right now, but it is lowered 3-5 with Joe Martin Sharks Tooth 20's on it. Then replaced the heater hoses, got the camber set pretty close, then set the toe in. I have had the truck over a year and drove it for the first time the other day. It had sat for over 18 years when I bought it. It is very rewarding to drive this thing down the road and make it back knowing I did all the work on it. I am by no means a mechanic.

Post Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I replaced the old junkyard HEI cap , rotor and plug wires with N.O.S. Delco parts .... the coil wire was missing from the sealed wire kit . I decided to bump the ignition timing up 2.5 degrees , it seems to hot idle smoother now .

I also removed & laboriously hand scraped clean all the spark plugs again , this time # 6 was incredibly oil fouled ~ once again it runs smooth as silk .

Are you gapping the spark plugs at .045, just wondering why the 1 cyl only fouling.

Post Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Actually ;

I opened them up to .065" before it'd go further than 150 miles before fouling several at one time , this after I'd up graded to '77 HEI system .

The valve guides are looser than madonna's knees ~ it uses oil (but doesn't smoke much) at a prodigious rate , I'm sure opec will be sending me Christmas Cards this year .

I really need to get the rebuilt head on it but I'm still chasing parts...

I was wondering, too.

The sun came out today, so I finished up the head/parking light switch and the "dummy" choke button set up. Replaced the hand-brake and the hand brake cover.

Put the steering wheel on loosely for a "final" test fit. You might notice the little button on the dash next to the ashtray. I got sick of screwing around with the horn.
And, the hole was already there...Some P.O. got drill-happy, I guess. Now, it's a teeny horn button.

Oops! Can't see it in these pics....
