Re: 61K10 build
Well haven't done much to the tk, been putting new cabinets in my kitchen, then the hot water heater quit working. Had to replace it as it was 17yrs old.
But i did manage to re-build a third member with 3.38 gears. Used a spare bearing with the ID hoged out so it would slide on the pinion to set pinion depth. used the toaster oven to heat the new p-bearing and froze the pinion--slid right on with a little tap. Probably temp till i build a complete new axle. 12B? or a custom Toyoda land cruiser as they look the same as the eaton. they even have the same rear cover and is a drop out. In less somebody has a new 3.90 r&p--ya right.

I like your toaster Oven, I used our regular Oven when I put the timing gear back on my cam for the 292... There's always something to do...

Re: 61K10 build
Probably in a few weeks Matt, just need to get up the energy, my old bones don't like the concrete. I need to finish staining my deck and get my garden in, plus yard duty. might just farm out my weed-eating on my back acre.

Ooooooooo! You're swapping out the floatation tires for some tall skinnys!? What size?
I'm debating between 255/85r16 and 235/85r16 for my suburban.

Re: 61K10 build
Got my 3.38's in the tk and good thing i took the new/old third member out. It wasn't happy being messed with. I put new pinion bearings and tightened up the back-lash. you could see ware marks on the R&P. also my axle seals were leaking a little, i guess i didn't seal them on the OD? new ones are glued in LOL!
Anybody have super gofers? I have one that killed a small pine tree and two bamboo plants. ck out the chewed roots. Just a pic for TJ--two 350's are better than one lol.

Looks good kimble. I bet thos 3:38s are going to be nice in the truck. Been driving my pickup latley. And those. 4:56 gears are probably going to go asap. Or I'm switching to a new trans With a higher Final drive gear.

Re: 61K10 build
Where are you finding parts for these old rear ends? I need a rear wheel cylinder I think for a 68 C30. I think it's an HO72 rear end. It's leaking bad but have not had time to pull the rear end apart to see if that is the culprit but I have verry little brakes. So, I am leaning that way.

Re: 61K10 build
Hey Kimble. Can you take a measurement for me? From the top of the rear axle tube, to the underside of the frame rail directly above it? Actually can you get that on the front too? You have factory springs right? I'm trying to get a baseline height for these stock K10s.

Re: 61K10 build
Jason can do. the 3.38 is only 1/2t Ho33 and will not be able to match the ft 44 only 3.31's which i stretching things as ratios go.

Re: 61K10 build
Two 350's is cool. haha That makes for 700 cubic inches. But I still prefer a 702 twin 6.

Re: 61K10 build
Hey Kimble great build! I've been lurking around for awhile. I have a 63 K10 that I've had for 27 years. It's been sitting for 10 years and I'm getting ready to get it going again. Just formulating a plan. My question is about the 3:38 gears in the rear. You stated that you could get 3:31's for the 44. But that wasn't close enough. I know they're suppose to be the same to prevent gear bind and breaking things but the difference doesn't sound that great. I had heard that a slightly lower (numerical) front gear could be beneficial as it gave a slight pull in 4 wheel drive. I'm interested as the 3:92's weren't a strong point for a daily driver.

Re: 61K10 build
Hi Greg--I know your town well as i grew up in Cazadero. So your 63 has a eaton HO33? my org rear was 3.90 and ft dana44 is 3.92. they say they have to be within 1% and 3.38's and 3.31's are about 2%. probably be ok on dirt or snow but not on the pavement for sure. Just finished yesterday on the rear end, haven't driven it yet. my trans sm420 makes noise when in 4th gear which probably mean bearings as the main-shaft and in-put is locked together. should have rebuilt it before lol.

Re: 61K10 build
First drive yesterday with the 3.38's, all i can say is WOW! much better than the 3.90's. even with 31" tires it still doesn't feel high geared and it is quiet. But the sm420 is noisy especially in 4th. I guess i will pull it out and rebuild, maybe find a newer one and rebuild it.
