cant wait to see it go past those little japanese turboed sewingmachines
speaking of turbo's still think it would be a nice idea for this car maibe even a factory stock setup (i think these engines allso came with a turbo fitted )

With as low as you set up the car and with as low as your Tahoe is, I'm wondering how you get them up over that "speed bump" getting into the shop. But, I'm sure you have a creative solution for that as well!

I don't plan to paint the exterior any time soon, and the engine compartmant will be that blue.
The birdie us on a temp jig I made based on the factory Honda tie rod location so I can match up the placement of the rack. |

OK, I stayed home from work today sick, and after reading through all of this (thanks for the entertainment) I feel even sicker. I can't believe you hacked up such a nice original Sunbeam Minx. What a hack job! You should be arrested!
No, man, this thing is just awesome and puts so many of our "cookie cutter" builds to shame. Just awesome!

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
On to the steering. You guys that have been following along on this magical mystery tour may recall my previous ramblings about the R&P/tie-rod/engine spacial conflict; they all had their own agendas. The following series of pics shows the final solution that makes everyone play well together...
For those just joining the fun, here's the issue: The steering rack needs to sit inside the engine block/oil pan in order to place the inner tie rods in their correct position (according to Honda engineering) to avoid bump steer and Ackerman angle issues. ..and the plasma cutter is not the solution I had a few different ideas including a front mounted rear/steer rack with bell cranks, or a center take-off rack with an offset center link ...but ultimately it came down to the KISS moto and I went with a standard manual rack (Truimph TR7/TR8) with offset ends and a linear bearing/shaft arrangement from VXB to add stability. TR7/8 rack and linear bearing components along with initial drawing of mount: Coming together: Welded up: Assembled: Placement (yes, wire-brushes have multiple uses ) Tacked in: |

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
The point of this whole exercise is to put the tie rods exactly where they were in the S2000 as directed by the shuttlecocked jigs Thus the need for an offset bracket to connect to the mismatched rack.
First bracket template: You can now see the justification for the linear tracking components. Without them the bracket could potentially spin on the rack stud, though not likely. I later increased the stud size to 5/8" from 1/2" (shown) and will weld them to the rack. Regardless, the added linear stability is a must for this design. Brackets are from 3/8" plate: Other side: ...and with jigs removed: |

Last update for today.
Got the drive-shaft in! This is a thing of beauty Built by JR at Oregon Drive Axle These guys build quality ...period. Fits like a glove (well, it's a bit tight on the left, but that's fixable ) S2000 front CV, D44 1310 rear: |

Wow! That steering rack is sexy! Hahaha! Seriously nice work! What the heck do you do for Intel anyway? Tool hookup? R&D? Some awesome skills man, I am a little jealous. *Thanks for the info about the driveline too, I need to get mine balanced on the Trailblazer and was not sure who to take it to. I'll call them on Monday. Last edited by Sub-versive; 05-22-2010 at 08:37 PM. |

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...
i love FF's drafting table. kinna looks like mine. but i don't make such purty drawings....
i'm surprised you didn't put the arms in and cycle the steering through the range of motion yet. man that thing is coming close to being done. then i'm sure tubby will get some lovin FF keep up the awesome work. you never cease to amaze us. that's such an ingenious method of solving a steering issue. totally outside the box, but looks awesome and you still use the inner and outer tie rods. no clearance issues to the oil filter?

Hey FF, great job on the steering. One question, do you need a gusset on your right angle weld? I'm wondering about the lateral stress on that joint especially should a pothole jump in front of you.
