Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Aztec.A,
If you have some pictures of those Highlanders, current or period, we would love to see them. The Light Yellow isn't exactly common for sure but a lot of the surviving trucks have had color changes over the years.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
The "new" Highlander has the avocado plaid and parchment scroll. It appears the seat has been covered since new with the clear Fingerhut seat covers. If not since new, then for a very long time. The passenger side has a hole through the clear plastic that lines up with a small tear in the plaid. The clear plastic on the drivers side is quite cracked and split and dirt has had gotten in between the seat cover and the upholstery. The clear seat cover and the upholstery on the seat back are quite nice. Today I pulled the seat cover off the seat base to clean the grime. In addition to the small tear on the passenger side, that side is quite faded. The front seam on the drivers side has started to let go. Iam looking for options and suggestions at this point. I saw somewhere (maybe this thread) that the plaid fabric is available. Is it feasible to replace just the plaid? Is the vinyl likely to fail without the Fingerhut cover on it? I like the idea of keeping some of the original if it will hold up. I will probably pull the cover off the seat back to get a closer look at that. Ideas, thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do with old vinyl when it starts to let go along a sewn seam. At this point I would consider replacing the clear covers to support what you have and give the material a good cleaning and drying. But they need to be fitted and tight to do any good. Look for an old trimmer to do any work.
Replacement fabric is available as are full covers on a custom basis. Reports indicate the plaid fabric is close but not exact. Not having samples in my hands of both makes it difficult for me to pass judgement. The replacement cover can be made with or without the scroll work and again its close but apparently not an exact duplicate of the factory pressing.

For point of reference, here are example pics of a recently made custom Highlander plaid bench cover. The scroll embossing is there but not noticeable in the pics.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Kevin yes, thank you. I'm converting the interior to a replica Highlander (slowly) but saving the original interior pieces. I regret missing your OEM Highlander plaid seat - that would have been perfect!

Deadhead NM, that seat looks great! Can I ask who reupholstered it and about what it cost? That is exactly what I'd like mine to look like.

Here's my buddy's GMC. It's not a "Special Promotional" but had the plaid seat and woodgrain molding.

Actually I have nothing suggesting there were promo package GMCs at this time. Guessing this closes the book on GMC Highlanders having the fawn glovebox and cluster!

Nice truck! That replacement seat cover looks right at home even if it isn't highlander plaid anymore.

RE; the wood grain side molding. Tim, could the plant of manufacture had something to do with the woodgrain molding. I had never seen a Highlander without woodgrain molding, that I know of, until I joined this site.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Yes, we touch on it often but everything points to all the original GMC trucks with the Highlander Plaid trim having the cluster face and glovebox door painted a fawn color. If you look at page forty down at #397 and follow the thread you can read a little more where we really looked at leh72super1500's truck.
Basically they used the same fawn color as they would have been painted on a parchment trim GMC truck. Seems that "special combination" planning didn't catch the harsh glitch. Since Chevys used body color for these two parts it isn't an issue on Chevy trucks. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...635040&page=40 Quote:
Both black and woodgrain were used on Highlanders optioned with the lower bodyside molding. Of the few buildsheets I have had access to both are seen coded to the truck at the same plant. So it isn't an assembly error. To get much deeper will require a lot more research and documentation that often isn't there for many assembly plants (IE Highlander build sheets). At this point my stock answer still remains to use what you feel the truck had originally. If it is missing, post up the vehicle and we will try and match a close truck or two for a good guess on what to use.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
I pulled the seat out of the truck to take the Fingerhut seat covers off so I could clean the grime that has collected for 44 years. The plaid is pretty weak but the vinyl is amazing and cleaned up really well. There are a few small holes from springs poking through that will need repair. I intend to keep the original vinyl and replace the plaid.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Sorry I missed your earleir post with this question too.
Ditzler 23374 "Dark Sandalwood" for the door and the flat for the cluster should be 23375. If you have an original door I'd suggest trying for a color match on the inside at your paint supplier.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
I'd suggest a few local repairs (in place) and another clear cover to protect it.

This is not mine but it does have the correct seat cover and it's a big block with A/C.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
This truck was post #343 in this thread. I had been looking for a Highlander for a while and when I showed it to my wife she instantly said "Buy It". The color combo is so different than what you usually see these days. It has original everything on it and everything works. One question I have? When I park it and accidentally leave the lights on, it has a buzzer that sounds like you would hear in a 1973 and later truck. I have owned many 72 trucks and none of them had this option. Was this ever an option on our trucks or is it aftermarket. Thanks. And thanks to this thread for connecting me to this truck

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Sounds like a great wife to have!
Congratulations on your "new" truck and I am glad it has an appreciative home. The P01s and whitewalls look great back on the truck. The buzzer could be a GM accessory or aftermarket but they existed. Either way they can be nice to have.
