100 bucks worth of machine work.......

New seat, valve, a little grinding and a resurface

Re: Senior Project Build

looks like the compression ratio of that cylinder will still be slightly lower. I'm speaking specifically of the grinding above the spark plug. But he'd have had to mill off quite a bit to clean it up.

Weren't you going to get some L92 heads later anyway...or am I thinking of another build?

Re: Senior Project Build

These are the L92's brotha.... I questioned the grinding and the machinist assures me it will be fine...... we hope. The resurface only took 3 thousandths off

Yessir...they're huge alright. Sure is a reasonable machine cost too.

Re: Senior Project Build

Ya I was pleasantly surprised that the machine work only cost 100 bucks. That mean I got a set of amazing aluminum heads for $650 including the trade value of the old 317's, some cash thrown in, and the machine/work

Re: Senior Project Build

Oh, I didn't notice the chambers as the L92's. If I'd have seen the intake ports in the pics, I'd have surely known they weren't the 317's.
Only .003 on the resurface? Wow...that guy is precise. I used to put new guides and seats in, as well as resurface heads (amongst other things) when I was a kid... and am thinking that .003 is almost not worth setting up the bench for. I'd guess most machinist would go .005 or maybe even as much as .008 to .010 on their 1st pass! I probably would have!

Re: Senior Project Build

Well thats what he told me. Who knows how much he really took off? I was contemplating having them milled to bump the comp. ratio, but decided against the extra hassle and expense, not to mention knowing if I could pull it off and still have useable heads

Re: Senior Project Build

Think of it this way, atleast at idle that one cylinder being a bit lower comp will give it a bit of a cam's sound..

My firebird sounded cam'd when it was running on 5 cylinders one day.

Re: Senior Project Build

Knocked out the old cam bearing and pounded some new ones in there...... quite the undertaking with all the rotating assembly in place. Slid the cam in and got the new double roller timing gear all situated. It's all downhill from here

Re: Senior Project Build

I am a recent converted old tech guy...I couldn't be more excited about the 5.3 swap I am about to embark on for my DD 70. I just got the motor mounts last month and am about to buy an LS1 intake manifold Monday. Gotta start collecting parts if I am going to get this done this summer!!!

Re: Senior Project Build

Awesome Kelly, thats cool. What mounts are you using? And what are you using for exhaust? Stock mani's or headers?

Re: Senior Project Build

I got the ECE mounts as a partial trade for my 454 long block. The plan is to get the necessary parts over the next few months. I am buying an LS1 [Z28] intake tomorrow from a guy on LS1Tech.

I am probably going with a set of Corvette manifolds....I am pretty much done with headers after this motor gets sold.

This next motor will be a 5.3/4L60E with a cam change [not sure which one yet], the car manifold/injectors/rails and dual exhaust with either 50 or 60 series flowmasters.

For the stepside [hopefully next year] I plan to jump off the porch with a 6.0/4L80E/supercarger or an LS3 depending on how the cash flow is going.

Selling the BB was a huge step for me....of all the GM's I have had in the past this was the only Chevy BB I have ever owned. But with the newer motors, I'll get better MPG and much more reliability and NO CARBS!

Re: Senior Project Build

Cool. Make an LS3, like I did. Use a LQ4 block and add L92 heads. That sounds like a great plan, and I am excited to see it moving forward.

Re: Senior Project Build

Not a bad idea. I am watching what you do for sure. Mine will probably be done next year [the LS3 anyway], but I hope to get the 5.3 in this year.
