Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Hello world... its been a minute or two since I posted an update. Well 2021 is coming to an end and lots has happened. I have worked on the truck but not as much as I would have liked too. I installed power locks (will post pics later) and tinkered with it here and there but due to some personal issues, Ive been limited or better yet, I hit the pause button until I felt I was back on my feet.
I lost my job back in July, after 10 years of hard work, loyalty and dedication it was decided I needed to go... so I did what any hard working man would do... flipped them off on the way out. With Gods blessings and a great network, I had a job the following week. But still had to get through some emotional and family issues.. Since then I have made great stride in my new position and I finally opened up my own company. The future seems bright and promising... I am back to working on the truck, I enlisted the help of a friend and will take it to his shop in January to have the wiring, plumbing done and get the engine roaring....CANT WAIT... I am currently working on the bed and need to have it installed before I take it to him. I need help though, I am not sure nor can I find good pics or info in YOUTUBE that shows how many CROSS SILLS the bed should have. Also the positioning. if anyone has good pics or info of an original bed or your bed.. please send them to me.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Hate to hear about the issues. I'll look for something on the cross sills.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Hey Robert, thanks for the info. I placed an order from them yesterday and saw the diagram. Just trying to figure out how or where the two center cross sils go, do they sit on the frame? if so how as it seems they both line up where the wheel hump starts, why does the bed kit only have 4 blocks if there is 8 points of contact (frame and sill) or do the 2 center sills not sit on the frame and simply are support for the boards?
aaaahh so many questions...

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
I'm not doing the stock frame, but as I recall there are long bolts that attach the cross sill to the frame. I'll look around and get back unless someone else gets back to you first.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Merry Christmas to all, hope Santa brought what you wanted. Lol..
Me I finally made time to work on the bed, I finally got to install last years christmas gift (trailer fenders) I welded on 5" tubs. Overkill? Maybe, but not sure what the future holds... I cut the fenders and used the rounded edge for a better look. Ill have to trim the bottom once I sit the bed.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
It may seem as if Im all over the place, but in order to finish the bed, I have to pull the truck out of the garage. In order to pull it out, I have to tarp it as this darn Houston weather is crazy. Sunny one day, cold and rainy the next. So in order to tarp it, I might as well leave it out a week or two. So to avoid all that nonsense, I might as well install the glass. This way I can push it out and not worry about the weather...
All of that mumble jumble to say this.. Door glass and corner glass went on today.. kinda proud of myself..lol Hopefully next weekend ill install rear glass and windshield(s)

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Thanks Robert, I bought the glass from Classic Parts. They were fast, and made good on a mistake they made. I ordered all black locking strip and for some reason they sent chrome for the rear glass. I called them, and I had the right part at my door in two days. Great service.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
nice work, I have read that those corner windows are difficult to install.
I like how your side windows have the chrome at the top of the glass, I guess that is another difference between 49 and my 51. keep it going, looking good.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Thank you Tempest... the chrome frame was an option when I ordered the glass.
Being that I had never installed any glass before, I was a bit reluctant. But after watching several YouTube videos, I decided to jump in head first. I have to admit, its not as difficult as expected. Especially being a one man show, most videos recommend having a buddy hold your beer, I mean the glass or assist. Guess having the right tools help, wont say it was a breeze, but on a curse word level from 1 to 10, id say it was a 2.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
I installed the windshields on mine and it was surprisingly straight forward.
I installed the glass into the seal on the bench, , held with masking tape, and then rested it on the cowl and did the 'rope trick' from the inside and removed the tape once it was in. also, I would recommend some sealant, between glass and seal, and seal and frame, as mine leaked in the corners and it would have been much easier to add during the install. I found that as soon as I added the new glass, the truck changed from a neglected 'farm truck' to a road worthy vehicle. keep it going

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Weekend didnt go as planned, managed to install the rear window but held back on the windshield. Since I have the original chrome trim, I plan to use it. Cleaned uand polished up nice. I mean it is 70+ years old. But ran into a snag, the center chrome strip is solid, but the plate the receives the screws, well that is showing its age, so unfortunately im not able to use it and will need to order a new one.
I started to work on the chrome trim for the door windows (also originals) but ran into a snag. As I was trying to install the exterior trim, it seems it goes in before the window track. Which means I have to tear my doors apart!! One step forward, 10 steps back.... a bit frustrating... lack of research.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
If that's the center piece with all the bolt holes in it, I can look here, I had an extra, just don't remember if I still have it. Let me know if you want me to look.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Hey Robert, sure.. I much rather use an old one as a new one will not match the rest of the trim.

Re: Jesses' 48 PU
Finally was able to take a Saturday off to work on the truck. I was determined to install the windshield. I tried it once before and ruined the rubber as I tried to do it by myself. This time I recruited my sons help and together we managed to install it. Not sure if its due to the chrome strip, but it was much harder than all the videos I watched on Youtube.
Glad its in, and now looking forward to finishing the bed.
