That's the same company as the restored hooch hauler, FWD. That was the car they stripped and put a wagon bed on for the military testing that resulted in these being used in WWI by our, France's, and Russia's military

Man, that is such a cool machine. Those axles and transfer case are pretty beefy too. I dig it!

They used real cast metal back then, now aluminum and next plastic.

That '42 Oshkosh I could own (or the command car). 1942...wow! Look at those round fenders and stainless trim. We have a fabrication shop (been wanting to stop in) in the next town that has a few sitting with plows. Newer, but they are all cool, right?

I have never seen an Osh Kosh in person but the pics I have seen the trucks always seemed to be very heavy made ,like concrete trucks and the likes .I used to have a model of one many years ago .Great looking trucks to me anyway.

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes
Those are both cool in their own ways. I'm wondering what kind of wheel that is on the Travelall. Probably something custom made. My dad had a set of custom made 10" white spokes (looked like Jackmans) for his '62 Land Rover 109 to run 12-15 tires.

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes
I've always been a GM loyalist, but far too many non-GM 4x4's made enough of an impact on me in my youth (I'm currently 44) for me to not try to fill the void with the best condition examples I can afford. After so many years of working on GM vehicles, I enjoy and hate at the same time the challenge "off brands" bring when it comes to figuring out how they work and sourcing original parts. Not my first Ford, but one I won't get rid of any time soon is this SWB '77 F150. I haven't done much to it since purchasing it other than fix odds and ends. It has a swapped in 460 that was executed well.

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes
Another Ford, but this one a '74 Bronco. I purchased it out west a couple years back and haven't gotten to it yet. I'm more of a preservation person than a restoration person so the plan is to put a softer riding, more up to date small lift on it, clean up the paint a bit, put a white soft top on it, and drive it.
The Jeep is an '86 CJ7 purchased in Missouri. It was very rust free but the paint was beyond saving so I did a light resto on it a couple years ago. It sees extensive dune duty and the inline 6 is a good match for the light weight Jeep. It needs much less power to climb hills than the heavy Chevys. |

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes
Lastly, it seems that most people tend to like IH Scouts. Unfortunately, finding one that you can't see through because of the rust is next to impossible no matter where you're located. I had always looked on CL from time to time in my area to see if there was a remote chance a rust free one would come up and one night as a flight was delayed I found the brown one. From NM and totally rust free. Problems are it is a very early Scout II so it has D30 Drum front, super low gear ratio (numerically high), and it had several bent push rods in the 304 which is a common problem with the IH engines if the motor has sat a while without running. After getting it running almost right (flat cam lobe I'm thinking) I figured I'd cut my losses and look for a good drive train and put the good body on the good frame/drive train.
I found the rusty blue one in OH and it checked all of the boxes. 345 that I was able to get running no problem, and overall an unmolested rig with just a ton of body rust. Frame is perfect though and it has disc brakes in the front on D44's with what I consider desirable ratios for what I use them for (3.08's). I tore it apart and the frame and drivetrain are in my garage now. Plan is a 3" lift with 31's or 32's. I had to order springs from Alcan since there are very limited options and what is out there is said to ride like a tank. Not sure what I'll do with the body...leave it as is or go full on repaint/stripes in the baby blue. |

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes
Nice ones. I remember seeing your F150 before. I like it. There is a '75 IH longbed 1/2t (2wd) for sale in by town. Actually, I know the guy. It's original baby blue and all there. It has very little rust. Wouldn't take much to fix w/o a full restoration if it was kept in and occasionally driven in better weather. I've always wanted to put one on a GM chassis/drivetrain, so parts and service would be simple while having something different than the GMs I've driven all my life and you see everywhere. That last body style was a stout sum*****. The same look I love in a '69-'72...boxy yet rounded.

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes
Yeah, I get what you're saying about the boxy yet rounded look (does that even make sense?) being appealing. The Scout and the Bronco both have that look going for them in addition to the 67-72's. The top and front of the front fenders and how they tie to the grill surround just works.

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes
Cool 'uns. I've been GM-only since '82 when I wrecked the '69 W200 I had. I'm not a bigot, though. Always said "I like XXXs, just don't want to own one". It's just preference mixed with familiarity, and a dose of consistency. All of these rigs you guys have shown are high on my appreciation list. I always liked the first Bronco and used to fantasize about downsizing one of my Blazers to that size. Then came the 78/79s. So cool...first full-size, last solid axle, last boxy truck design, and only 2 years. I knew these would be hot. All the pre-80 4wd Fs held their value like the '87 GMs did a long time into the normal dime a dozen used vehicle phase everything goes through before climbing as a hot classic. That baby blue rallye pack is a sharp looking scheme on the last Scouts and Terra. I really like those Terras, too. IH and GMC have always been a notch above in my truck world as these are the light end of real truck companies. Chevy trucks are like an afterthought that became the prominent figure by no merit other than buyer mentality. People who liked the car wanted that brand truck. That's where I started.
Lemme see what I have to show I haven't already. Hard to keep track at this point in this thread, and no way I'm scouring through to check! "There's no such thing as an ugly truck...unless you're a car guy"
