Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I finished the bottom side welds and then wire wheeled it clean. Then I rolled and brushed on this Duplicilor rust barrier. I doubled up where the welds were just for extra precaution. Half way into applying it I remembered that I had heard the only thing that will seal bare metal is epoxy primer, and an unopened gallon sat 5 feet from me.😩 It will be a PIA to get this stuff off if I made a mistake. My feeling at the moment is this, if this truck has made it 46 years left outside with only a minimal amount of rust to repair, I figure I’m gonna be ok without the epoxy primer underneath this stuff. What do y’all think?

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Watching their demo video on their site, they use the rust barrier on rusty metal without a primer. Knock off the rust and hit it with a grease and wax remover and apply directly over rusty metal.

From your pictures you were way ahead of what they were doing so I would say you are good to go.

Some of the paint guru's may chip in and say otherwise tho.

oh, no wait... it's totally messed up and I will gladly take it off your hands!

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Yesterday I picked up an older aluminum cap for my '72 for swap meets and camping. Today, after the rain I have been waiting for to wash the roads clean, I uncovered the truck. I keep it on jack stands with the tires barely touching all winter and now it's time to drive it. The routine is first rotate the tires and lube up the brake sliders. I noticed the chrome lug nuts had a little rust starting, so I used chrome cleaner polish, wiped, waxed, and polished off first. Got the wheels on, off jack stands, started up, and moved truck trailer spot, and trailer with new cap in truck's spot to unload the cap for painting. That's it and it took a while due to the lug nut situation. Next is mount the cap for Carlisle

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

A friend gave me a 1969 C20 Custom Camper. My 14yr old son and I cleaned it up, tinkered on the wiring and installed new/used wheels and tires on it yesterday. Planning for it to be his first car when he gets his license. Will be leveling it in the coming weeks. Trying to find lift ideas for a C20 lead me to the site. Thanks to all who post as I have found some great information. Having fun working on it with him!

Hanger bearing crapped out so I removed the two-piece shaft and I will try to drop it off at a drive shaft shop tomorrow.

People all over the world call their own stuff "junk". It's probably just the idea that no matter how good we think our vehicles are, we know somebody has gone to greater lengths to create theirs. Of course, it could just be the joke about opposites. Kind of like calling a big guy "Tiny". Also, your collection sounds pretty good.

Used an old school bead roller, hammer and some round bar bent to the radius. This finishes the cover plate for nv3500 swap. A bit of black paint and it will look store bought.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Got rid of the stupid plastic air cleaner spacer that was on it when I got it, the air cleaner would even sit straight. Put on an Allstar aluminum spacer with an o-ring seal on the bottom. Took some convincing and a small cut in the baseplate of the air cleaner to get it to fit for some reason. But it’s on there good now.
And put a new Accell distributor cap and rotor on. The one that was on it said made in the USA with no brand so I’d say it’s pretty old haha
And lastly I made a pretty neat overflow for my radiator from a cool old bottle my uncle gave me.

I put my engine back in as well but I dropped mine in. Setting it in would have been nice. No major damage. Hydraulics quit on my hoist.
