Re: Restoring Rusty

after carefully considering using high heat BBQ or header paint on the hood belly I decided to shoot it with the paint I already had!

I (and some of youz) really like this Semi-Flat Crayola secret sauce

Re: Restoring Rusty

looking much better already and this is only after the first coat, since the surface was dark already you get roughly two coats per can

Top Tip: if you don't like white fuzzies on your surface than it's ok to clean with paper towels but don't rely on them for your final wipe down, use something else

Note: the cross flow ventilation in the dishwasher safe organic paint booth (yes I still wore a breathing mask in order to protect my brain cells, yes both of them)

Re: Restoring Rusty

we start our Annual Labor Day: Labor of Love Project with a scrap piece of 16 or 18(ish) gauge steel

we square it off a bit and cut it into semi equal rectangular pieces (blowing our 8th grade geometry teachers mind)

I did say "semi" even (we will trim them down to eveness later)

Re: Restoring Rusty

at this point my cousin Joe Goodenoff showed up (think National Lampoon's Vacation cousin Eddie) and said "lemme show you something... hold my beer"

and he took an ordinary grade 5 bolt and proceeded to decapitate it...

Re: Restoring Rusty

ladies and gentlemen, the Taco Hood Struggle is real!

and although LMC Truck sells these as a "Hood Brace Kit" for $20 bucks, it is honestly a joke and I rather roll my own

Re: Restoring Rusty

not too bad, I grounded the welds down a bit but not totally flat so that I wouldn't weaken the welds nor be unable to find them later if I needed to drill them out (that's my excuse anyway)

shot sum primer and ready for paint

Re: Restoring Rusty

then it was on to the other side and the whole reason why we is doin' this in the first place

this side already developed a hairline crack in the safety fold, so I bugger welded it up

and just like on the other side we ground the surface to bear bare (?) metal prior to welding

Re: Restoring Rusty

tell me if this has ever happened to you: with two spot welds left we ranned out of welding wire?

Re: Restoring Rusty

but I wasn't gonna let this stop me, so I replaced the Lincoln .035 artillery with the .025 caliber (i.e. all that I had on hand) and grabbed the gun for the home stretch

I must say I like how the .025 lays down spot welds, now I'm sure if I knew how to fandangle the knobs on Big Red properly I could achieve the same results with the .035 but still the .025 agrees with me just the same

Re: Restoring Rusty

Re: Restoring Rusty

a little stare and compare, what a difference 5 minutes with the orbital sander makes

and then it was time for some Phosphoric acid treatment from Home Depot ($5.00, I'm looking at you $25 dollar Metal Re$cue), this is the potion I should have used the first time on my original hood, but I messed up and used muriatic acid instead (stupid me, should have paid more attention in Chemistry class)
