Re: 67 long box
Well it's off the road for a winter rest but not without some heart surgery. It's going under the knife, just talked with the machine shop about adding lots more ponies to my engine. I'm getting the 5 speed cleaned up with all new bearings and seals. The old tired engine might have 150hp left in it and the three speed needs an over drive so, 375hp and 5 speed should be better

Haha I like the "under the knife" reference. That upgrade will be awesome!

Re: 67 long box
The removal process has started my that I'm healed up after surgery. Time to get that engine/ tranny out, get the new tranny prepped and strip the engine for rebuild.

Re: 67 long box
Engine looks clean inside, a sign of regular oil changes. I also found my exhaust tick, just as I thought chipped valve. Good news I found no damage and it has 040 over pistons. It looks like it's going to be cheaper than I thought.

Re: 67 long box
Well now I did it, go big or don't play. I'm keeping the pistons.

Re: 67 long box
Well after 10 try's I did it. One rebuilt steering box. The heads on my truck are garbage so I have another set coming, this valve and others were cracked from improperly installed valve seats that are all loose. They machined the seat insert holes to big then tried to center punch around the holes to tighten in on the inserts. Junk Junk and more Junk. The cam was almost round, lifters were junk, timing chain was ready to fly apart, and the rockers had grooves worn them . Two studs were ready to break off from the rockers rubbing. Again JUNK.

Re: 67 long box
You have more patients then I sir. I rebuilt a steering gear once before and I decided then that it'd be the last. Sucks to see the engine like that, at least you'll know that it is done correctly this time.

Re: 67 long box
The steering boxes are tricky to put back together. But, they’re pretty reliable once reassembled correctly. I’ve done a few and never have had one go back together on the first try. The trick is to accept defeat and start over.

Re: 67 long box
Thanks I forgot to mention I used pipe cleaners bent 90 degs and put one in each bearing hole stopping the bb's from going the wrong way. Pushed them all in from one hole and done. Worked like a charm. I did forget to take pics.

Re: 67 long box
Blew the 283 on my red truck the other day. Off to Calgary tomorrow to look at another 283. Found a nice set of Camel Hump Fuelie heads to put on.
I thought you were going to go LS?

Re: 67 long box
Well that sucks and I kind a understand. I was looking at some double camel heads as well but found new ones for mine. I want to keep the old school engine, it just seems right, maybe EFI. later.

Re: 67 long box
I have a 67 truck 327 waiting for rebuild but just spent a bunch of $ on all new brakes, tune-up and 3.07 rear end swap with a Richmond Locker. 283 sounds like a low mile rebuild that the guy changed direction. I will pull the motor and do a transplant as soon as the weather breaks.Taking a gamble but will put all new gaskets and the humper heads. I bought another CST long box so now I have 3-67's. Eenie meenie miney moe. One has to go..... someday lol.

Re: 67 long box
New heads are here and I'm liking them. They look great, now to wait till next week when the rest of the parts come in. New heads, cam, lifters, rockers, timing chain and gasket set should help this engine. Rockauto.com has done me right so far. Everything has been on time and correct.

Re: 67 long box
I agree with your Rock Auto plug... I just have to tell myself to plan ahead instead of running down to the local parts house. So far its way better and cheaper too.

Re: 67 long box
Being in Ontario Canada really sucks for getting parts, I pay at least triple for everything than anywhere in the US. It's sad that I can't afford to buy local when I can have it brought to my door for less from the US. I even get whole sale prices from my friend at a NAPA and it's still cheaper.

Re: 67 long box
Rock Auto is my go to for all my auto parts they are inexpensive, fast and you get what you pay for with lots of different brands to choose from for each part. The local auto parts store just can't compete.

Re: 67 long box
Awesome build. Truck looks great.
Good to see another from Ontario. Free parking here if you are ever in the Falls. I have the same truck and I thank you for the ideas and motivation. Derek Bob and Blair the Ontario blue truck boys.

One more piece to make it's heart beat stronger and breath better. Retro look with 1968 Edelbrock intake.
