Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

As we continue to add weight to the back, the old rear springs keep flattening out. You can see the nose high stance in the first pic.

I spoke to a couple spring manufacturers and have plenty of options...except, we kinda need to have a realistic rear weight. That's not gonna happen until we get it closer to being done...still have a lot of weight to add with fuel tank, lift cylinder, and whatnot.

The short term solution for us was to add 3" lift blocks in back so we can continue building with a better idea of the angle of the dangle moving forward...rear driveline, new rear shocks (more on that in a couple days).

Instead of building new springs with overloads, we want to go with an air bag overload system. That way we can optimize spring design for vehicle weight and ride quality and not expected load capacity (i.e. crappy, stiff, ride)

So, that left a lot of frame brackets we didn't need anymore...held on by a couple dozen rivets.

Then that left a frame rail with a bunch of holes all over....so...

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

We had a bunch of holes to fill!

We pulled the rear and put the truck back on the lift to work through some frame mods we wanted to try.

First, we decided to go ahead and box the rear section of the frame between the spring hangers.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

We're working through the passenger side frame rail first...this is going to take a few days to get done!!

With the frame boxed, we're gonna sink sections of pipe through it, ranging from 4" down to 2" along the length between spring hangers.

and weld those holes shut!

You guys are doing some real neat stuff to the truck.
The frame is going to be stout and really cool looking.

Looks really good. Dumb question here...are the holes just to follow the theme of the build or will they serve some other purpose? Either way it looks very stout!

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

really great work, I got a question do you plan on running the brake lines, wiring and air lines through the frame ? if so you might want to consider getting the hard lines in place first. keep up the good work, its gonna be cool. Coop

Thank you AD! There are no dumb questions, and with us, there isn't always a legitimate reason we do things! We mainly like the look, but the boxing and thru tubes will add substantial strength to that section of frame.

Thanks Coop, we will run all the lines/wiring externally on the frame. I like visibility/access if there are any issues and wouldn't trust pre-ran lines/wiring subjected to the heat of the welding we're doing.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

So, a bit of hole sawing (actually burned up one drill, had to go get another!), a bit of welding, a bit of smoothing, and the passenger side is done!

All of your guy's trucks are amazing. This and the Suburban are my favorite. I love the speed holes in the frame.

Re: 1958 Apache 38 Dually Dump Project

That looks awesome! Seeing that makes me think my 40 Ford's frame needs that treatment.

Part of the reason we are reworking the rear of the truck is to make room for a custom 44 gal. tank we ordered from Aluminum Tank Industries, Inc about a month ago. Tank came in today
