Nice work! Looks good, even if it is flatish black. Don't scratch it putting it back together!

Once I got the rear axle in I moved it back into the shop. Decided mount the rear shocks as well. I then put all new seals into the front axle housing and got the gears all set back in the housing. Started cleaning the knuckles out as well so that I can get some paint on them. Just need to get the kingpin rebuild kits and I should be able to have it back as a roller.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I went up to Dieselwrenchers for a week and spent time helping him get his long horn running for Goodguys and I brought home some more parts.
2nd Gen intercooler and a shifter for the transmission and a couple other things. Got to looking at how to install the intercooler in the core support and putting it in the front was looking like it was going to take a lot of work. It is very close to the lights and the grill does not have a lot of room between it and the core support. So I decided to flip it over and see if it would fit any better. Looks like I will just have to cut the main supports out of the core support and it should fit in very nicely. I will have to build some new supports but that should be easy. I am looking around for a radiator for the truck now so I can make sure that after I cut it it will all fit like factory. I also got in a intake flange from Ryanroo so I can make a custom intake for the truck. Thanks Ryan!

Nice plan on the intercooler. Thanks for the help, I hope you had a good time. PS You may want to check your gun case............... I hope the black rocks will suffice.............

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I ended up buying the radiator back that came out of this truck when it had a 454.
I set the radiator in the stock place and it looked like there was a ton of clearance for the intercooler so i started cutting on the core support. Intercooler will fit down in there nicely after i drill two holes for the bottom mounts. Then I will have to build some upper mounts and put in some new vertical supports.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well tonight I got some time in the shop and have the intercooler finally setting in the core support just how I want it. I still need to make the top mounts which should be pretty easy. One thing I was trying to do while I was mounting this intercooler was to not modify anything on the intercooler so that if something happened to this one I would be able to buy a replacement and it would fit right in.
The only thing I had to do was move the upper mount rubber isolators in farther so that they would clear the back of the headlights and allow for a bolt to be able to pass through them.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I have enough clearance on mine so I won't have to trim it down at all. How did you go about making the top mounts? I think I'm just going to make a u shaped bracket that gets bolted to the core support and the the intercooler bolts to that.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
You have that IC sitting in there nice. Almost as if it was made to go there. As far as clearance goes for the rad support to the frame, what about welding a nut plate on the support and running a bolt up from the bottom. Almost the same idea as the original cab mounts? I was thinking this would work as long as the bolt size was cut down only to protrude 1~2 threads max. Might be easier than getting a wrench in there?

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Oh, and the upper mounts you could try some angle iron then drill/tap out to bolt it to the IC. Then when you have it lined up weld the angle to the rad support, using the IC to hold it in the right spot. Not sure if this is th best way, but that was how I was planning on doing it.
Looks great keep up the good work.

This is how I went about bolting the intercooler in. Just made a bracket and welded a nut behind it so I wouldnt have to hold the nut. Sense I cut out the main supports I also needed to replace them so I went and picked up some 1"x2"x 11 ga to build new supports. I have not welded the supports in yet, but in this picture you can see the intercooler and radiator all bolted up and see where I plan on putting the supports.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Still plugging away on this thing slowly. Been trying to get all my school stuff figured out, and doing what I can while I have no money
Got the kingpin stuff in finally and started putting the axles together, also got the ujoints in the axle changed, that was not cheap... Still have some stuff to paint before it goes back together all the way but it should be a roller soon.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
That is the same here, but school is going to be starting in I guess 14 days now and that is going to cut down on shop time and time to make money by quite a bit and I still have some important stuff to buy.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Looking good man. Once you get school out of the way and get a good job the truck project will be a lot easier to fund. I knew how you could get it done way fast but your dam boat had a huge hole in it.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I have a feeling if this truck isn't running before school is out it may set for a while. I have a feeling I'll have to buy a reliable truck after I get a job so I'll probably look into a 3rd gen cr. and then that will probably end up in IA getting modified haha. Yeah that boat sure didn't help out with money...

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well this weekend I got quite a bit done with the truck with the help of Dieselwrencher. Ryan brought me down some more parts for the truck and also came down to pick up a new project of his that i traded him for parts. The engine transmission and transfer case is hopefully in for the last time.
And this is the new project Ryan took home with him.
