Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

I thought I would add this one as well. It has been storming the last few days here so I could not put the truck out side even if I wrapped it their is way to much wind. So it is slid to the side of the booth, wraped and a second plastic wall put up in front of it. Sure makes for a small booth

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

I personally like the all black look under the hood (firewall, inner fenders, rad. support) but I guess that's because my first 67-72 truck was like that. You just need a little color to bring the eye to the engine.

It's hit & miss around here. K-mart used to be good about stocking it but then they shut down in this area. WalMart doesn't seem to order it regularly & my local mom & pop hardware stopped carrying it as well. Just takes a little more searching, but I still use it when I find it.

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

I think I want to go with powder coat for teh rims and wonder how close they could get to it.

Here are a few pics of one of the fenders dressed up a bit. I must have had my Air PSI way off because I got some real bad orange peel on this set of parts. Well I have been wanting to try my hand at color sanding and buffing I guess now is the time I put the last coat on real heavy because I saw the orange peel starting to set so I know I have plenty of paint to get a nice level finish. Should be fun! Also here are a few pic's of the fender just to show how different this color looks in different light but still no sun shots here in sunny Ca. Also I was in a hurry to get paint on so now I am drilling thru fresh paint for my trim clips I will be using alot of caulking on the tabs once polishing is done and I mount these for the last time.

I almost forgot I am thinking about using these screws for mounting the lights. I will chuck them in the poor mans lath and get rid of the dimple in the top and shin them up a bit. They are S.S. and should polish up nice. What do you think? Any other thoughts? These are flush with the lights right now.

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

I am digging the look your going with on this project with the stock trim and subtle body mods and a factory type color and wheels.

From a traditional stand point is where the argent silver or dull aluminum paint comes in for rally wheels. I like most purist kinds can appreciate different colors of rally wheels but still love the original look for the argent or silver colors. My truck when I first got it had truck ralleys I painted a deep metallic blue.......looked good I guess on a primered truck but on a painted one silver or argent is the way in my opinion.

Since I have a 72 with 68 frt clip I was also tempted to place stock 67-68 side trim only on the truck........your emblems and relocated side markers are killer.

Nice work! Dressing the fender in trim really sets off the color.

Can I get a pic of the stand used to hold the fender for painting?

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

Thanks guys I was not sure just how the trim would set things off and now I know. It looks just incredable as far as I am concerned! It will look even better after a few hours of cutting and polishing. My wife did not want the trim to go on but I think she has a different opinion now that she has seen it Once the truck is all together I think it will make one hell of a dump runner

I was first going to go with the 69-72 top and bottom trim but I thought with having the 70 grill still on it but a one off 67 hood to fit the 70 grill that why not switch to the older trim. I like doing things that make people second guess them selfs as to what they are seeing. Same goes with the lights! I was going for a stockish look and I think I will end up with just that at first glance. Then the stance, hood that should not fit this truck, lowered and smoothed lights, later modle trim, LT1 vett set up and other misc stuff.

I can not wait to start my 2wd blazer because it will have slight mods (And alot of not so slight when you really look at it) from bumper to bumper. It will be a fun one for sure

Kevin,... EVERYTHING looks beautiful! I will be tuned in for the blazer build. A little off topic,... Did project "slow build ever sell? If so, did a lucky member end up with it? Thanks for keeping us posted.

No slow build has not sold yet. I have had alot of lookers but I am not pushing it at this point. I am already loosing so much on it that if it does not sell I might finish it but then again I have way to much going on right now for that!

The Blazer build, well how can I say this with out getting alot of hate mail...
The first part of the build will be getting it all back to a real good stock body thru new panels, factory panels and things like that. Their will only be limited pics of it at that point for certain reasons. After that it will not be seen untill it is fully built and ready for the shows, Sorry

I totally forgot you were using a 70 grille shell and 67-68 custom hood.........and I thought I was paying attention. The full aluminum grille shell with the 67-68 trim is going to fool alot of people.

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

Well not much progress in the last several days as I have been tacking care of my son and oh ya had to go to work as well. Mom's been working 12-14 hr days to finish up a new software package for the state so time is at a loss this week. My sons doing good and Mom is getting a raise/promotion today so all is well. What I did get done this week was drilling all the holes for the SS trim on the front fenders and doors. I also played around a bit with color sanding a few areas of the wordt orange peel just to see what I was looking at and boy did it knock down quick. I just hit some spots with 1200 for a test but I was very happy with the results and tonight and this week end I will color sand all of the doors/fenders with 1500 and finish with 2000 before polishing to a mirror like shine I also will be painting the top of hood, cowl and glove box door and if time allows the radiator support so I can start putting it all back together next week as the polished pieces get done. Sorry no pics but I will have some starting Saturday. Have a great Friday if at all possible!

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

Well it is not much but they are pic's! Started doing a bit of color sanding today before we take off for the inlaws for the night. I started with 1000, 1200,1500 and finished off with 2000 then rubbed and polished by hand. My polisher that I ordered might be in but I left my cell phone in my tool bags on the job site friday so I have no way for the guy to get a hold of me to let me know if it is in or not But I had to see how it will look but better with a real polisher. I had my air psi to low and got bad orange peel on the doors and fenders so a bit more elbow grease on my part. I hope to shoot more parts on Sunday if we get back in time. Here is the pass side fender and it was not as bad as the drivers side that is now partly polished.

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

So I was board and thought I would go back and see were it all started. Just under 1yr ago this project started as a tow home non running long bed in need of help. The build has stayed close to teh intended starting point that I had with a few extra items added. But all in all I feel it has gone well for under 1 year to the point of being half way done with paint and having been tested for over 5,000 miles to date. Also keep in mind I have had 3 different customer builds with a few few day projects as well mixed in. Then their is my son that came on 7-9-7 and has been a big part of any free time I thought I might have but because I married up ( a car chic) that for some reason likes seeing me happy (in the shop building) this build and my other projects have continued. I just can't wait to see what the next year will bring.

First thing is get it running and on the road as is. Then we will move onto the ride height, it will get drop spindles and lowered springs up front and in the rear I will keep the leaf springs and most likely do an axel flip kit, C-notch and a set of over load bags to level out the ride with the trailer hooked up.

Once that is done I will move onto turning the fleet side bed into a short bed and cutting the frame down as well. I will show step by step pics for taking your fleet side bed and with a little cut and snip end up with a short bed and also cutting down your long bed frame to match.

After that is done we will move onto rust replacement, body work and paint. I think this will be a fun build for all of us and I hope people get good info out of it. If you have any susgestion or coments please let me know, while I have a plan I will be following it is not set in stone and may change here and their just abit.
