Good to hear you're back to work on the truck.
Yeah that is a fair amount of money for an exhaust system, but that seems to be about the norm these days. That's the main reason more and more guys are building their own exhaust system.

Vernski that truck is looking good!! Captain -still hoping to get get up north to meet you and the North Idaho guys, Youngest daughter is looking at Univ of Idaho in Moscow and Montana State Univ in Bozeman. While drinking coffee and waiting for daylight this morning I found these on Ebay . They look like a import version of the Speedway tru rams. Any body ever tried them?? A search here on the site did not turn up really anything one way or the other. Would they work any different or better than a stock ramhorn?

Glad to hear your new motor survived the winter! What's with the primer hood. Planning on getting started on body work this summer?
Those exhaust kits Vernski is talking about work pretty well. That is what I used on my truck. A lot of cutting, fitting, adjusting and lying on your back with a mig welder but they do the job. I still paid a muffler shop about $180 for tailpipes.

Hi Mark!! !
I bead blasted your old Holley intake and it sure looks sweet sitting on my new motor!! A friend had given me a hood last summer without any dents and since mine had a crease on the drivers side where the PO dropped a ladder on it, I went ahead and put it on last fall. So today I removed the headers and loosely hung up the ram horns and studied things for a while....... like how to run the exhaust. I never did really like how little clearance there was between the back of the HEI and the firewall so I went ahead and unbolted things and slid the whole motor and tranny ahead 1 inch and re-drilled the frame for the motor mounts and transmission crossmember. It fits much better in the engine bay now. I had done some searches here before and it seems that some guys are even using the front holes with a V-8 so I just went ahead and just went 1 inch ahead . I had decided to go with the swept back ram horns on both sides so clearing the frame and crossmember is not a issue. I have one, And the spring swap meet is in two weeks maybe I can pick up another. If I have to, I may just order a matched set of Dorman replacements manifolds. How much clearance do you have by the starter with the swept back manifolds, will a full size starter still fit??? Any body ever run the exhaust outside the frame railsand dump ahead of the rear wheels?? sure would be less clearance issues with the rear arms Thinking about what to use for mufflers on 2 inch duals, (no cross over) Smithys?? glasspacks? They may be too loud unless they were the long style.

I have block hugger headers on mine so I can't comment on starter clearance. Mine comes off the collector and angles back at about 45degrees, very close to the back of the lower control arms. Then straight back with the mufflers outside the frame rails under the cab. Originally it was dumping in front of the rear wheels, very loud and obnoxious. Tailpipes made all the difference. Very tolerable noise level now. I used the inexpensive Thrush welded mufflers. I tried taking pictures but can't get any good angles from the garage floor.

Hi Bubba just caught up on your build and it's awesome. I took my truck to a local muffler shop and had the exhaust come out under the step. I'm thinking the pipes were on the inside of frame. With knock off flow masters and chrome tips it way cheaper than 600. Maybe a different shop will do you better

Drill some holes in the cross member and go though there. Mine comes out the side and its loud. My 52 goes out the back can't even hear it. Nobody said cool is easy. why no x over? doesn't take any more

I had thought about running my exhaust out from under the step like Chevelles did, until a friend pointed out that it makes for soot-dirty rear wheels from the exhaust. So I canned that idea....not that I mind cleaning and all that, but I am loathe to make more work for myself in that respect too.
I am almost at the exhaust deadline stage too, so I am following this closely for ideas as well !! Good Luck

It is good to have friends..
It turns out that fellow member Valdez and his dad Cokeb still had a few sets of manifolds squirreled away and Kyle is removing yet another set this weekend from his 72 so he can install headers. He plans on the extra HP at the drag track helping him with better times. So I swapped him the headers I had for a set of their swept back ram horns and then used their sandblaster to clean them all up. One of them has a few broken studs to fix first.. hoping the PB blaster works miracles and they will just fall out with out a fuss. So I am planning on 2 .25 in duals I guess I will go ahead with a 2" H crossover then turn out under the frame rails , then to 4 in round mufflers which will then kick out in front of the tires. I had put turn down dumps on a truck a few years ago and it just stirred up the dust and always made a mess. I have access to conduit benders and the 2 in rigid shoe is just a little bigger than 2.25. If you put wet sand in the pipe for the bigger bends it wont collapse. Still making up my mind on mufflers .. Smithys.. Brockman mellowtones... which are steel packed or Thrush or cherry bombs as long as possible. I dont really want the cackle of glass packs , just a good deep bad a$$ rumble As for the sooty wheels I bring the pipe out farther and almost pointed straight away from the frame,Did not have a problem before except the exhaust noise reverbs back off passing cars or trucks in the next lane over if the windows are rolled down Just noticed that One manifold has GM stamped on it, The other has GMT. Is the one a truck manifold? they are exactly the same size and output (2") except for mirror imaged L and R....

Hows life treating you at the North Pole?? I had the exhaust kicked out in front of the tire before with the inline six, It was just kinda noisy with bounce back off passing cars, trucks and buildings . I would like to run them farther out the back , and then kicked out if I can do it.. I have seen them run straight back between the tire and frame on the outside of the frame rails but I thought it looked odd. Maybe if they were bent up and over?? I have the aluminum fuel cell behind the rear axle I would like to stay away from..

The Brockmans are hand made and quite reasonable, Cheaper than flowmasters.
here are the two stamps from the ramhorns, Any body have a " By the Numbers" book?? one is GM and one is GMT

Well no wonder its loud Dave...
Went junk yarding at Jalopy Jungle our local pick a part yard yesterday. You can spend hours wandering around for only dollar admission. Bring your own tools. Found a 63 one ton knee knocker that was pretty picked over but it did still have the hood supports in reasonable shape. I had borrowed the ones out of my old blue hood for the the newer primered hood. I was glad to get them to put back on the other hood Found a set of six cylinder power steering brackets to clean up and resell to someone in need of them. They are kinda hard to find so I hate to see them get crushed. found a 66 that still had the 283 in it but was also picked over pretty well too. I was mainly checking out the exhausts on the trucks and found some crazy home fabbed scabbed together stuff. bad welds,big kinks and mismatched mufflers and different size pipe,I saw a set of duals that had a glasspack and a regular oval stock muffler. Quite a few were wired in place with coat hangers or what we call hay bale wire.. gotta love it I combined my daily walk with combing the long rows of junkyard treasures pulling my hand truck along with a milk crate strapped on to carry my tool bag and a bucket for the parts. A great day in the spring sunshine!! Learned a new trick on U tube for removing the broken studs out of the exhaust manifolds . Just heat them up kinda red hot, a whack or two with a BFH on the bolt shaft then put some wax from a old candle on the base of the bolt at the thread line. It does not flame up and the hot wax flows down in to the rusty threads . Use vise grips to remove the broken stud . The wax was a new trick to me. worked great!! after they cooled I chased the threads with a tap and ready for new studs the high temp paint is still drying on the manifolds- I will post pictures next time

Had to take a little road trip across southern Idaho today.
On the drive back I was getting stiff and sleepy so I stopped at a favorite happy place of mine just out of sight from the interstate and went for a walk among the treasures. The man who owns the place is a great guy and very helpful. He knows exactly where everything is and nothing is in order, just random stuff everywhere. All is for sale and honest fair prices Boys, there are still a few places left like this...
