Re: Starting my engine build

You may want to do some research on body and suspension mounts before you spring for urethane squealers that can creak and moan and will drive you nuts everytime you turn a corner .a lot of guys bought them and then took them back out and used rubber .

This is interesting, I'll start researching now and read up. Any suggestions on crossmember for my truck and correct trans mount? I don't mind forkin out some dough if need be, I just want to make sure it's right

I'm so excited to drive it with new mounts, it's gonna feel a lot faster and smooth

Re: Starting my engine build

Stick with stock rubber mounts. Unless you like excessive squeaks and vibrations.

Leave the urethane mounts for the drag strip on a drag only rig.

I'm glad I asked because having done all that work to get squeaks and vibration would be a bummer

Re: Starting my engine build

Just a small update, did a lot of running around today and put together some parts to finish up the engine/transmission build. It's getting close and that makes me nervous but also very excited.

I took the chrome water pump off and got a nice plain one to paint orange. I decided 215.00 bucks is too much for a water pump when I need transmission parts and mounts and fluids so I'm prepping and painting the water pump, and also doing some prep in the motor well. Little bit of masking and that should be ready for the first coat of black.

The water pump was too expensive, but I like the pan a lot. It holds 3 extra quarts of fluid and is already drilled and tapped for the temp gauge. Anything to keep that transmission cool!

Re: Starting my engine build

Alright!! I got the engine lift ready, the motor well all painted up in semi gloss black, and I cleaned up and painted the perches that bolt to the motor mounts. There's nothing left to do but drop it in and bolt everything up, and then the break-in! I'm pretty nervous about the startup, but I've gone over everything I did and I read ALOT, so it should go good.

I'll have some pictures up of the motor well all painted and the progress of the engine going in soon. Anything you guys want to add or some things I might've forgot would be greatly appreciated

Matt

Re: Starting my engine build

Do you guys use break in oil during initial startup and breakin? I have assembly lube and break in moly on all the parts, so I'm wondering if 6 quarts of actual break in oil are needed?

Also, do you guys bolt on the motor mounts AND the perches to the engine and drop it in, or do you bolt the perches to the frame?

Re: Starting my engine build

Looks great!
I bolt the motor mounts to the motor and bolt the towers to the frame.
I have had to loosen bolts on one or the other if the main bolt was being stubborn.
Use break in oil as well as a good zddp additive if you want your cam to live.
Make sure motor fires off quickly and keep your rpm above 2k for first 20-30 minutes. Valvoline Vr1 should be sufficient. I heard it was on sale at Autozone this month. Fyi.
Be careful with dist. on install. I usually install after motor is already in.
Good luck, have fun, and have a beverage or two😎

Also make damn sure you get the torque converter fully seated in the trans before you bolt up the flexplate.

Re: Starting my engine build

Pushed on the torque converter and it went one click and it wouldn't go a second so I backed it off and turn it a little and it slid way on. There's at least an inch between the converter and the outside of the bell housing

Re: Starting my engine build

Looks good!

When seating a converter you should feel 2 distinct "thunks" One when it engages the input shaft splines and the second when it engages the oil pump. If you don't get that second "thunk" you will destroy your tranny oil pump.

When you bolt the bellhousing up to the engine you should have to pull the TC forward towards the engine a bit to get it to touch the flexplate. Just make sure you have your flexplate on the correct way.

That deep transmission pan might not clear the crossmember, but you won't know until you go to install it.

I was just getting ready to ask if the converter should have to slide a bit towards the flexplate when bolting it on. Thanks for the reply!
