Yeah, I guess they want you to talk nice about them. It's the best advertisement they can have.

Yep ,probably so...but I doubt I'll ever do another dash like this and I doubt my opinion, good or bad, will affect their business....haha

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Fabbed some new rear cab mounts out of 6x6 angle....to replace the old shackle style mounts that had sagged from age...I'll use rubber pads for cushion and also be able to adjust rear cab height...once the cab is set in place I'll drill the cab side bolt holes and add a gusset...more overkill...but that's me...

Do you get tired of praise? I suggest you get used to it if you haven't. Great job as always and the gauges look awesome. Can't wait to see them in the dash.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Stuck the new cab mounts on ...before this ,a 2x4 laying on the frame rail had the cab sitting level with the frame...the new mounts and 2 pieces of 5/16 thick 90 durometer rubber have it sitting about 1/8-3/16 lower than the 2x4...so it should work just fine...I can shim it up as needed...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I was also getting ready to put the sealer in the gas tank and found a mess...there was a good amount of rust in the tank so I researched tank cleaner/sealer...Bill Hirsch products came highly recommended...I bought the kit that has the tank flush, etching fluid, and sealer...I went thru the flush and etch process but when I got ready to use the sealer I got to looking in the tank and it looks a mess in there...all kinds of charcoal looking crap along with varnish and oxidization....I've sent off a email and waiting on a responce before I proceed...heres the best pics I can get of what it looks like..

Cab mounts look good. The tank, I'm not sure, does the black stuff flake off?

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

If you can't find someone close to boil it out, when I was a kid, a LONG time ago, the older guys told me to clean out my gas tank with a 3-4' piece of chain and then roll it around in the tank, shaking it around. I did and checked the progress with a flash light and it did clean it up pretty well.

That or phosphoric acid? There’s a thread on rust in the General Discussion section about cleaning metal chemically. I think it was phosphoric but might be misremembering.

Yep Robert...I already did the chain thing when I did the initial flush....I'm gonna give the chain thang another shot and see what itll knock loose...
Yeah John...I've read thru that thread several times...it starts out with him using evaporust...then everybody else's rust removal trick...but I think the rust neutralizer I used took care of the rust...at least what I can see...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

So I dumped a half gallon of purple power in the tank,,,added the chain back and several gallons of water...sloshed it around for about 20 min...I got alot of crap out of it...this isnt 1/10 of the crap I got out...just what I caught with a rag..
I gonna take it to work where we have a steam hose...more purple power and chain...well see what extra hot water will do...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

well shucks......that didn't work....
I poured in purple power and stuck a straight steam line in the tank and let it run for 30 minutes..let it cool some ...then threw in about a dozen 1" nuts...rolled it around for awhile, dumped it and still got crap all in it...so I filled it about half full of water, added more purple power ,stuck the steam back in and let it boil for about a hour...dumped it all out ,flushed it good .....
and it looks like crap..!!!
got some batteries in my bore scope so I can see all around inside...
and it looks even worse now that I can see the whole inside....
maybe I can find a radiator shop...
if that don't work I don't know what ill do...

I'm guessing you need a rad shop to clean it. It's got a lot of stuff left in it? (Notice I said stuff).
