Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

It is a highlander. Want to see exterior. Then we can help you with what it might be worth. I'm guessing as Tim said it was more than likely a engine swap. Most people wouldn't swap from a four barrel to a two, but my father was one that did by using the two barrel intake and the holly economiser two barrel carb. He said his ran better with the two barrel and got around 18 miles per gallon.

The listed engine (LS9) was a four bbl 350. So if it has a two bbl you are looking at an intake swap if not an engine change. The block stamped engine assembly code is a good place to start trying to ID the engine.
More pictures are certainly welcome!! :-)

As always, don't let a "find" tempt you to accept paper promises. Make sure it has a title you can transfer.
The reason I stopped to look at this truck was for parts for my 71 Cheyenne. The bed floor, rockers, doors, fenders and above the windshield were rusted bad. It just so happens I had read this thread explaining what a Highlander was. Couldn't believe I found this one sitting out in a very rural part of Missouri. I recently got into these trucks and I am learning a lot. Thank you for the information in this thread. I only took a few other pictures of the truck and none of the outside.

It was built as an orange plaid. But like many it is heavily faded.

Glad you found the thread and hopefully it has saved another truck but the rust does sound pretty invasive. :-(

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Jocko's post is excellent and on-point as always. Just want to call attention to the recently posted SPID that indicates a Janesville build and as such the truck wouldn't have the Custom Camper door emblems located as shown, which was Flint specific. Also, as a Janesville build the Custom Deluxe emblem would be centered under the C20 fender emblem correct?

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Bingo Pete! Yes, J=centered emblems and I forgot which plant did the off-norm Custom Camper placement - was really just going for the color sample and cc combo, but great point. Spacing should be like below for Janesville (and all others except Flint).

Btw, funny story on the Orange Custom Camper (the first and second pics in the earlier post are actually from different trucks. The one I posted the picture of the door was a truck I saw at the annual Brothers show a while back. Beautiful truck, and it was a highlander - but the guy had replaced the plaid inserts with some gold crushed velvet. Looked ridiculous. I asked to see the SPID, saw the Pkg C callout, and plaid, etc - and he STILL swore his gold velvet was factory original restored 100% to original. There's always one in every crowd... The money he spent on this thing was unbelievable and it was gorgeous - but he didn't know his truck and sure wasn't open to any polite questions about it either. Wouldn't let me take a pic of the SPID after that either. Strange folk, but nice truck.

Many I hope someone grabs and restos the solid orange one we're talkin about, that's a great combo.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Hidden Highlander alert. Most people don't go out of their way to "add" PA1 wheel covers... So, if I were a betting man, I'd say this is a heavily altered highlander - but they managed to retain the parchment door panels and the PA1s... I bet it's got plaid on the SPID! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-C-...m=231915859963

Thanks Jocko!
"Fully restored 1972 custom built Chevrolet C10 pickup truck."
Could be anything but you are right those wheelcover are pretty much seen only on PromoPackage Highlanders. While they were optional on all C10s (and twice the price of P01s) we don't see many so "upgraded". But I do know of a Super that was, so they are out there.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Found this nice YG8 Package Highlander on Ebay today. Interesting to me this says 613 Custom Trim for the seat code and my truck says 613 Green Plaid for the trim code. The Ebay truck was a Baltimore build and mine is a Janesville build. I find these little anomalies between production plants interesting.

Nice truck! SPID anomalies abound, for the most part Baltimore didn't trim code their trucks. Highlander trim and Promo Package Highlander were amomg the few that were.

Here is one that is currently on EBay. I know it's not totally correct but I sure Love the Orange and White combo and loaded and big block also.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Yep, saw that one - beautiful truck. I wonder if the seller, who makes sure you know it's a highlander, knows that the major things that make it a Highlander are all missing.. Plaid seat, parchment panels, PA1s, etc. PA1s missing is pretty common though. It is a great looking truck.

I agree and it would add up quick to locate and add all the correct items. It was definitely a nice one from the factory.

It's the rare "Custome Camper" rather than the much more common Custom Camper... Is that SPID like a 2-headed penny and, therefore, somehow worth more?

Just a Baltimore anomaly, have another just like this with both the Z62 CUSTOME DELUXE EQUIP and Z81 CUSTOME CAMPER EQUIP as well as other Z81 CUSTOME CAMPER EQUIP SPIDs. No worries there!

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Found another "Hidden Highlander" this morning.
After running down the details here it is for you to see.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...580132128.html

Unfortunately it isn't the Custom Deluxe/30 I'd hoped for nor a 20 series Longhorn. But it does turn out to be an original L47 402 truck with lots of options including "Custom Camper" emblems.
Being a YG8 Promo Package truck it had all the goodies along with a 618 Orange Plaid seat and 458 Deluxe Two-Tone (Hugger Orange).

While the ad states its a C30 it isn't and the engine might still be the original 402 (subject to verification). Seller stated on the phone that the plaid seat is still present under the slip cover.

Hopefully we can find this a good home and return it to its original glory.

This one was posted in the Craigslist finds thread today. A C20 Longhorn Highlander loaded with options.
