Re: How about some pics of 73-87 Long Beds?

Heres my old 85 GMC Sierra Classic. I installed the clip and doors from a 1990 suburban, then I lost interest and bought my crewcab. I then stripped the truck for all the good parts and dropped it off at the wreckers :-(

Re: How about some pics of 73-87 Long Beds?

Ya. As it turns out the trailer was pretty worn out, when it was on jackstands the axles would move side to side about an inch because of worn shackles. We learned this after it was rolled. Also, for some reason, the back left tire was much taller than the others. Had it been the same size as the others, this might not have happened.
It started to sway, then the left rear trailer brake locked up. The trailer whipped to the left, pulling the truck around, and everything went in.
The truck is facing right in the pic, I was actually going to the left but it spun all the way around and rolled into the ditch.

I do miss my 3 on the tree.

Its an 86 GMC and it belongs to my brother in law, its his baby that he'll probably never sell. He's done a ton of work making it a reliable truck, just needs a new body now!

Re: How about some pics of 73-87 Long Beds?

That what I originally thought. But the 1st gear synchros are shot, and it pops out of 1st and 2nd if you don't hold the stick. (1st and 2nd if you count the gears L-1-2-3)
Truck has 178K on it.

Re: How about some pics of 73-87 Long Beds?

Kenny, is there any way I can paint the recesses on my grille? Each opening has a recess around it that I want to paint black or body color.

All the recesses are a PITA to get painted and I painted all mine one color. Mainly it's from so many different angles and the paint building up on the leading edges.

I got the best results from laying the grille flat on it's back and using light coats to gradually color fill everything. if you go to heavy at once, the paint will all build up on the front edges of the holes and make a mess. just go light, its a pita to scuff up all that for painting, but it's a bigger pita to sand runs out of all those little nooks.

Also make sure to paint it with LOTS of light. you'll be amazed how much you'll miss even with good light, so with bad light it'll probably look like camo...

Here's what's left of one. It was a 6.2 at one point in time.

I like how you capitalized TRUCK because you are right.... you now have a REAL TRUCK, not some piece of plastic they make nowadays. Nice truck

Thanks for the kind words. It's nice to know that there r some people that appreciate all the hard research, time, patience, money & work it takes to do such a restoration. New trucks r nice but they r too expensive and feel too much like a car when u ride in them.

U just gave me some motivation to fix the misc. things like: heater core, Line-X Bedliner, GPS alarm, etc. Little by little.

Re: How about some pics of 73-87 Long Beds?

The 6.2 had to WORK this weekend

The new truck is a 91 K2500 (6 lug) the 6.2 in it doesn't run, acts like it has low compression.

How did the 6.2 pull?

I wonder if one would pull better than my built 350.

Re: How about some pics of 73-87 Long Beds?

NO!!! lol, a good running 350 would walk on it, but damn if that 6.2 wouldn't get crazy good mileage even with that load behind it...

The 4-speed would be the saving grace when pulling with a low first to get out of the hole and a taller 4th to cruise and use some of the torque.
