That is a nice one! I saw it listed on EBay a few weeks back. Congrats!

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Just bought the truck, thought the interior was aftermarket maybe done years ago and wondered why it had white door panels. I'll check the numbers when I get home. Truck was originally the light yellow

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
So my truck seems to not fit the specs, heck even the color of my seat isn't listed on the original post. Here is the glove box page

It has the Parchment Custom Deluxe trim code so the door panels are correct in white. The seat would have been a white with dark ivory cloth inserts. The dash pad and the steering column would have been a light tan called sandalwood. The floor would have had a sandalwood color vinyl matting. The exterior colors were a 525 Yellow body with a 521 White roof in the conventional two-tone pattern. Guess if you wanted to you could do a serious rework and have a Highlander look alike.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Pretty awesome to see what these old codes mean and what the trucks actually looked like. My uncle still has his orange plaid highlander. It's a custom deluxe too. He won't sell it to me nor does it run anymore.
My father had a 72 in the green with the plaid and the white panels. I was dumb at 18 when he offered it to me. When I went back to ask for it he had sold it. Good stuff man. My 72 is the light yellow also known as Grapefruit Yellow. A rare color from my understanding. |

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Might be the original cover that has had the cloth replaced at some point. It was once a pretty common repair.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Aztec.A,
If you have some pictures of those Highlanders, current or period, we would love to see them. The Light Yellow isn't exactly common for sure but a lot of the surviving trucks have had color changes over the years.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
The "new" Highlander has the avocado plaid and parchment scroll. It appears the seat has been covered since new with the clear Fingerhut seat covers. If not since new, then for a very long time. The passenger side has a hole through the clear plastic that lines up with a small tear in the plaid. The clear plastic on the drivers side is quite cracked and split and dirt has had gotten in between the seat cover and the upholstery. The clear seat cover and the upholstery on the seat back are quite nice. Today I pulled the seat cover off the seat base to clean the grime. In addition to the small tear on the passenger side, that side is quite faded. The front seam on the drivers side has started to let go. Iam looking for options and suggestions at this point. I saw somewhere (maybe this thread) that the plaid fabric is available. Is it feasible to replace just the plaid? Is the vinyl likely to fail without the Fingerhut cover on it? I like the idea of keeping some of the original if it will hold up. I will probably pull the cover off the seat back to get a closer look at that. Ideas, thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do with old vinyl when it starts to let go along a sewn seam. At this point I would consider replacing the clear covers to support what you have and give the material a good cleaning and drying. But they need to be fitted and tight to do any good. Look for an old trimmer to do any work.
Replacement fabric is available as are full covers on a custom basis. Reports indicate the plaid fabric is close but not exact. Not having samples in my hands of both makes it difficult for me to pass judgement. The replacement cover can be made with or without the scroll work and again its close but apparently not an exact duplicate of the factory pressing.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
For point of reference, here are example pics of a recently made custom Highlander plaid bench cover. The scroll embossing is there but not noticeable in the pics.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?
Kevin yes, thank you. I'm converting the interior to a replica Highlander (slowly) but saving the original interior pieces. I regret missing your OEM Highlander plaid seat - that would have been perfect!

Deadhead NM, that seat looks great! Can I ask who reupholstered it and about what it cost? That is exactly what I'd like mine to look like.

Here's my buddy's GMC. It's not a "Special Promotional" but had the plaid seat and woodgrain molding.

Nice truck! That replacement seat cover looks right at home even if it isn't highlander plaid anymore.

Actually I have nothing suggesting there were promo package GMCs at this time. Guessing this closes the book on GMC Highlanders having the fawn glovebox and cluster!
