Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Is the clear bubbling or just looks like rust under the clear?

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Doug, It's really noticeable! I happened to look inside the truck last week and saw it first on the garnish molding, and then looked more and it is everywhere!

Lower50's.. No not bubbling.

I did do some searching around and most people are saying bare metal will still oxidize with clear,do to no rust inhibitor. some say you have to basically heat the metal to dry it out then spray the clear on.
There are several products out that you can coat the metal with but it is not a clear coat.
Eastwood has one that you apply and let it go. Another product is shark hyde and it also wipes on.
all these will need periodic application as needed.
So now it is my decision if I want to go through all the work to remove all the clear, re texture all the metal and use one of these products or simply prime, bodywork and paint the pieces. (which will change the look I was after)

The strange thing is I have seen several cars in the last 3 yrs that are completely bare metal and clear and they have no rust issues and they drive the cars to all the shows I go to...

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Ya I have some rust forming under my clear on my bare box sides. But it is not bubbling so I wasn't to concerned and looks cool. I have heard the bare metal guys either scotchbright all the time or use a mineral oil, with no clear. I did figure it was because of some moisture under the clear.

Yeah I think it also has to do with oils from our skin as well. Now it's deciding if I want to strip and redo or what..

Thank's for the tip on the video stuff I'm using VLC media player on the comp. and you can't find the files if I wanted to upload to photobucket.

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Update....

Don't know if you guys remember the old cooler I have and was planning to finish it some day...well here it is.

Pic #1. The main body all flaked (Roth Tropa Cali trippin flake)

Pic #2. The lid was done in silver flake.

Pic #3. This was just after getting it put back together.

Pic #4. Then me and a good friend went to the Greasarama last weekend for a car show in KC and I had some work done on the cooler.

Pic #5. On the ride home..

Speaking of rides we had the upper Rad hose blow an hr out from the show!
Luckily we "rigged it" good enough to get to a parts store and get a new hose and all was good till we started to the hotel and hit a pot hole so hard it made the Drivers side glass jump out of the track and shatter the glass!!
aahh good times!!

cooler looks so good. dang talk about bad luck on that trip. I hate pot holes beyond belief. I had a windshield crack by hitting one once.

That's a mighty fine cooler Mark!!
I did a few in the past, but only the stripes, no flake.
Those are fun to work on!!

Small Update...
I picked up a 99 silverado last week has 140000 on the truck, was a farm truck. The inside was severely beaten up.
It is a 2wd and runs and drives great, best part is I paid $600 for the rig and after I remove the drive train, harness etc. I have the remaining truck already sold!!
This will be the donor setup for Orangepeel.

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

The biggest thing for me right now is balancing out all the projects I already have, plus the new ones lined up.

The Chevy coupe,FJ, an 86 chevy truck for cab corners etc, 74 Bronco for extensive metal work, John's 49 Dodge for A/C, and a 78 Trans AM for floor pans!!!
Then comes mine...

FYI I,m not complaining at all just doing the balancing act.

Well, it is good to have all the customer work to balance! Mark, the floor pans in the 78 TA would be interesting if you could document in alternate tinkerings. A friend has one he may need to do.

Absolutely my friend!
If I could only get the car to the shop the customer has a full time job and a farm so not alot of time..

You're a very busy man, Mark!
Doing what you like to do keeps you going

Are letting us in on your projects? Making threads of it I mean?

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

I'm considering doing some more threads, just not sure what vehicles to go with.
The T/A will be a short thread it will just be the floor pans, rocker and upper cowl piece. It will be and out of the shop that week.

The 74 Bronco I may do that one do to it has extensive metal work to be done, and it may contain useful info for guys that are diving into the deep end of "metal repair" and could be helpful.

The 38 chevy I have been working on is slow going, (lack of parts) and I could probably show some pics on that one soon.

Thank's again my friend...

Re: "Project Orangepeel" 52 A.D

Hey Guy's, here is a small update on "Orangepeel"
I have been looking around for these headlight rings for several yrs and was always 10 min. late to the party and missed out...

Pic #1. These are from 53-54 Buick and I was on Ebay one night and ran across these for all 3 $60.00!! I hit buy now and here they are.
The one on the far left is the worst of the bunch and has alot of pitting (I think the seller just wanted to get rid of this one)

Pic #2. I mocked them up on the truck to see what it would look like (using small clamps)

Pic #3. In this shot you can see the fender does not line up with the ring so this would need to be addressed.

Pic #4. A friend of mine had a pair of Buick fenders he donated to the cause. I will cut as needed and blend into the stock chevy fender.

That was certainly a good buy! Creative idea...don't believe I've seen those headlight rings on anything other than a Buick.
