Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Just to be clear, that figure includes all the parts that are on the truck/going on the truck and also includes things not even purchased (because I haven't found a good enough deal yet )
including vintage air, paint, rims/tires, custom gauges, custom center console, wood bed components, etc...

I'm guessing it will go up by another 1000 or so when I get everything done as I find little things I forgot to add in. I've been keeping decent track of my receipts and costs but I know I've forgotten some of the things.

Total retail PARTS ONLY NO LABOR

$39,075

Surely, you jest?! That is quite a chunk! Man, I am trying to get our 69 on the road for under 10K....wow! I am floored.....where are you at with labor? $50K?

Amazing, isn't it? I'm shocked how quickly the cost of parts add up, especially on a truck that is going to be as nice as yours when it is finished.

It really is amazing and shows how people have $50,000+ in their trucks

If I paid a large shop to do all the work I'm sure the labor alone would be 30-40K EASILY. Think about it, between Jason and me, we'll have over 600 hours into the truck. Say a shop charges 60/hr (on the conservative side) That's 36,000 in Labor! Add that to the 39K and you have a 75,000 truck

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

That being said, you can put together a really nice truck for around 10K if you do all of the work yourself and find good deals on the parts.

As I mentioned, I won't have NEAR the retail amount listed for the project. I couldn't come up with that much cash anyways. For instance, the air ride components add up to around 2500. I will have around 1000 total and I've even made some money selling air ride parts I got with a package deal. Other deals have been even better. Retail is 40K. What I'm paying is not

Maybe some board members will read this and not bash the next guy, that's asking $15k-$20k for a truck that he has for sale.

Keep up the great work on your build.

Thanks. Hopefully it will also help people put a realistic budget together.

Well, these pictures are from a few days ago but just got them uploaded so you can see the progress on the driprail and firewall grinding. Still more to do but getting there....

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Jason is going to tig where the welds had to be ground down and left a small gap. Don't want to just use filler. We're going to do this right!

Also, here are pictures from tonight of the firewall. A little better than the other ones. He did clean up and rust convert/seal up the wiring gutter area before closing it up. Forgot to mention that last time.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

The firewall and roof is really looking good. You are a way ahead of me on our firewall smoothing. I know how time consuming it is to weld and grind all that sheetmetal. You were right about the 22 gauge being on the thin side. It is easy to burn holes in if your not careful. I think when I do the angle on ours I will get some a little thicker to make go a bit quicker. Do you know what you used to seal/convert the wire gutter? thanks, Keep it up!

It's called "a cranberry red pearl color yet to be chosen"

I've called the project "Long and Low in VA" in other places but I'm not really much of a vehicle namer. The closest I have come were lisence plates. STANG 2C for my 95 Mustang, TRBO BUG for my Turbo diesel new beetle, and MUSCL CR for my 80 Z28 Camaro
