Both of these are from the seventies I believe.
They use to give the Airplane Watches to the kids.
The nose folds down and there's a digital readout.

Still needing a visit from Dentist Fixer.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

72KAY20, if you're still around - how's your Raptor liner holding up?

I've decided to not do the Line-X and spray the tintable & black U-Pol Raptor liner instead. Save me a few hundred. Seems to be a real favorite over in the Jeep forums. Colorized, the shade is a little lighter than the paint being match, but I'm okay with that. It's just going on the walls/tubs of the bed so nothing heavy will be hitting it.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Lite, try the Al's liner. Really thick and tough for around 100.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Don't care much for the look of Al's.
I've already bought the Raptor, should be here tomorrow.
Since it's only going on the tubs and inner walls of the bed,
I don't need real tough. Just something different and
will save us some labor hours.

Cool, that was gonna be my other choice til I went with Al's. It is tintable and sprayable, BTW.

An example of U-Pol Raptor tinted:

Sorry about editing my previous post. I was thinking of Monstaliner.
I like how the look of Raptor is close to Line-X (sort of).
My application will be mostly for looks.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Let us know how it turns out. I've used the SEM tintable bed liner and it works pretty well too.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Told you we'd get some paint sprayed, it's ZeroRust again.
Scuffed, cleaned and sprayed the insides of the doors the best I could.
Made sure to hit the bottom good too. Header panel getting some
attention also.

I'm having second thoughts about spraying the Raptor liner.
I keep thinking of shinny bronze paint in the bed and how it'd go with the wood.
What do ya'll think?

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Can't find any pictures of a 67-72 Chevy truck projects, etc..., with Raptor
sprayed in the bed and with a wood floor. It's a big deal sorta, If I spray it, it aint coming off.
My other idea, just paint everything, then use the Raptor to decorate the front bed panel. After painted,
scuff the recessed area only, except - leave a large Chevy bowtie logo. The logo would
remain shinny paint and the rest of the recessed area would be the liner material.
I'll have to mess with PhotoSlop and see if I can get an idea.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Well, I found a couple Line-X'd Chevy truck pics with bed wood, but not tinted.
Probably the best examples I'll be able to find.

Even though this is black and doesn't have bed wood, it's cool because it was how I was
considering spraying the front panel, tailgate, tubs and bedsides. Leaving the top curved part of the front panel
painted and staying below the bed rails as shown here (ignore the floor):

Not the greatest example of the bowtie, but this truck does have a similar front panel.
Imagine the truck was painted med. bronze and just the recessed area of the front panel
was sprayed with tinted liner - except for a [whole, solid] bowtie in the midde,
which would be basecoat/cleared. Just an idea.

Doors, front panel, cowl cover and tailgate finished primed.
Doors and tailgate seam sealed. I think he'll be painting some jambs next,
putting doors back on etc...

Pics up later. Yes, still going copper poly!
You would too (go original) if your truck is to look identical to this one!

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Not the most exciting, but pics are pics

Pictures of doors and tailgate (seam sealed), bed front panel and cowl cover.
Self-etched then 2K Urethane.

Taping up; prepping for heavy bodied 3M seam sealer.

After. Decided to just cover all the pits.

2K Urethane primer.

We're going for that factory imperfect look

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

looking really good! keep it up... I'm digging the idea of raptoring the inside of the bed and strips and having a wood floor... I was kind of skeptical when you said it... but after seeing the pictures... I may need to follow suit! How much of a pain will it be to pull your tape on the bowtie without putting a tool smudge in the fresh raptor? I have a vinyl cutter... I could cut your a cheap bowtie that you could stick on there instead of taping it... If I use low grade vinyl it won't stick as well as good automotive vinyl. You could also put a vintage looking Chevrolet script in it then too.

Thanks! The Fixer does awesome work! I'm not expert, but I give it my best. bundeber, if you want to cut out a bowtie that'd be cool Vintage Chevrolete script sounds cool too! I got the idea, more or less, from seeing Line-X is a lot stronger than Raptor and would hold up much better. Here are some Line-X Chevy trucks And here are some Line-X stencils.

The difference between what you see in their stencil gallery and my idea, my Chevy logo would be the actual paint of the truck, clear coated just like the rest, surrounded (outlined) by bedliner. That picture above of that cool truck with black bedliner that I liked the look of, their website is down (gone) now, they took the picture with them. Fortunately I saved a copy! . Later, I'll recolor it and try to implement my idea to that picture.

--------------
In reply to the questions - Not sure what a tool smudge is, but if you mean a raised line or pieces that pull away - from what I've read, if you pull the tape right before it is [fully] cured, it comes out clean. As for the Raptor, not sure it'd be tough enough to withstand harsh treatment the skid strips may endure at times.

Wow, the post above is chalked full of editing errors. I was in a hurry.

Corrections:

I got the idea for the bed front panel, more or less, from seeing Line-X stencils.
Line-X is a lot stronger than Raptor and [Line-X] would hold up much better.
Here are some Line-X Chevy trucks gallery And here are some Line-X stencils.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

I can cut you one and ship it to you... you pay shipping and I'll cut it for free just to see it done! Let me know how big overall, how thick you want the "mask" outline to be.

As for tool smudge, I think it would be hard to get ahold of the tape that you use to mask it to get it to peel up. You'd almost have to have a piece stick up that you could grab so you didn't have to dig into your fresh bedliner to find your tape.

here's a pdf file of kind of what I'm thinking. I'd spend a little more time cleaning it up.... but you get the idea.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Hold up An emblem with text inside? That sounds difficult.
I was thinking of a solid emblem, not just an outline. I'll try and PhotoSlop a variety of examples.

Tool smudge - maybe pieces of string on the corners to pull it away once the liner dries.
Something like that, if you're saying the vinyl will "stick" itself?

"cheap bowtie that you could stick on there instead of taping it.
If I use low grade vinyl it won't stick as well as good automotive vinyl."

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

I'd be concerned that good vinyl would stick to your paint and clear too well to be easy to peel off after you sprayed the liner. Lower grade vinyl doesn't have the same quality of adhesive on it, so it would peel more like masking tape.

String in the corner sounds like a good idea, or maybe a section of sticker or tape doubled back on itself so you could peel it.

The text probably wouldn't be too bad considering all but the letter C would be connected, I think it would pull pretty easy once you got it started.

Re: Project "My Happy Mess"

Got your explanation of cheap vinyl. Sounds good. Also your suggestion for doubled back tape sounds
like it'd pull better than string. As for the text, if I'm understanding correctly - The Chevy emblem outline,
and the text inside, would be the bedliner? Or, the emblem outline and the text would be the basecoat/clearcoat
of the original paint?

I'll try and get something made up tonight w/Photoshop just to see if I can bring ideas
to life a little.

Those body panels look great man!!!! Did you tape before Sean sealing so you didn't get it everywhere? And how was the ease of use of it? Iv been wondering also what to put on the inside of the door bottoms.
