Re: Starting my engine build
Which way is which when turning the distributor for timing change? And should I have it with #1 and #8 facing straight forward upon initial startup, or turned one way or another?
Thanks guys! Getting close! Matt |

Re: Starting my engine build
firing order is 18436572, Look at the distributor, the rotor turns clockwise, to advance you turn the distributor body counter clockwise, that makes the rotor hit the individual plug wider location sooner

Re: Starting my engine build
Your getting very close ! Double check every nut bolt and screw , Before you "fire" it have a fire extinguisher close by and another set of eyes watching for leaks ,etc . I just use straight water for initial run ups and save the anti freeze for once your your ready to button it up and drive it. it's a real pain to try to save the anti freeze if you have to deal with a leak . just like when your painting a truck ,Prep, prep, prep and things always go better .

Re: Starting my engine build
Thanks Mike! Do you keep yours just like the one in the picture upon initial start up or do you advance it a little?

Leave the distributor loose enough to be turned by hand but not loose enough to turn by itself. It will turn clockwise if it does. Once it fires you might need to do a quick adjustment. Also, crank up your base idle screw one turn so it's instant rpm. Keep a screwdriver handy if you need to crank it up. Start the motor outside if you can. If inside you might want a big fan in front of the rad. |

I'm hoping today is the day. I have some wiring to finger out still but it's coming along. I'll snap some pictures of the ones that are stumpin me. PO made a real mess. I'm leaving the headers and exhaust alone for now. They are 1 5/8 primary long tubes and 2 1/4 inch flowmasters "kit", not ideal but it'll definetly work for now. |

Re: Starting my engine build
Just don't forget that break in is 2000 rpm for 20 minutes, don't let it run at idle, have a screwdriver handy and turn up that idle screw. If you run into a problem shut it down and fix it, but upon re starting get the idle back up.
You will probably smell paint curing, if you got anything on the exhaust its going to burn off or cure and may start smoking.

Re: Starting my engine build
These two Eletrico clips are coming off of a small box on the firewall just to the right of the heater core, any idea what these go to? I have the basic stuff marked but some of these wires are beyond me

Re: Starting my engine build
This intake and carb are different than the ones I took off, so I'm having some trouble with a couple things there too. The positive terminal on the electric choke, does that just run to the battery? And, these three are running off the firewall but I'm not sure what they go to. I think the black boot may be the temp gauge? And one looks like it plugs into the distributor, but it's not the tach wire

Re: Starting my engine build
Most of the wires I'm trying to finger out go to this box on the firewall right next to the steering and brake master cylinder. Anyone have a diagram or can tell me what's what in here?
Thanks guys, I know it's a lot of questions on electrical, but the PO did some weird stuff to the wiring including painting it all black Matt |

Dangit 40 bucks!!?? lol I coulda got 4 of those for the price of this one I'm not sure they sell one without the shift light and a lower rpm, but I didn't look hard either. It was a quick purchase so I'd have it for the start up. I AM ready!! lol but the wiring isn't yet. It's coming along though. I have my little helper today so it's slow goin |

Re: Starting my engine build
OK I got a hold of the wiring diagram that was color and I've tracked down a few of these. Yellow and purple is the starter that goes to the distributor and there's a ground. The green is spliced into an orange which is what was confusing me, but that's the temperature gage. And the blue one with the boot on it is oil pressure but I'm my oriole pressure brass piece that sticking out of The back of the intake manifold has two prongs for, and the blue wire with the boot on it only has a spot for one prong to plug-in but I think I can figure that out. There's another wire coming out of that same bundle that goes out of the firewall and straight into a boot that plugs into the bottom of the brake master cylinder but I don't have power brakes so I'm not sure what that's for.
Any help with the ones in those pictures would be great, the previous owner sure did hack this wiring up, splicing with wrong colors |

Re: Starting my engine build
This thing is kickin my butt! LOL I'm callin it, dinner is ready and hott and you know what happens if you let it get cold....
The two plugs ended up being for the old points ignition so that mystery is solved. Took apart the rest of the wiring harness and cleaned it so I could see some color (harness in the engine bay that is, not the whole thing!) and got everything wired up and figured out. I need some 90*'s for 5 of my spark plug wires, that's holdin me up. Wired up the tach and did something wrong because instrument cluster lights don't work now but headlights are fine. I plugged the tach light wire into the fuse panel in the dash cluster fuse spot. It's almost all the way top right of the fuse panel.... Sheesh, anyway, back at it tomarrow. |
