Interesting paint job, kind of like it being different. Cool idea.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I like it, you know it reminds me of a 56 chevy two tone paint job. If that's a rail cap on your tailgate [don't know if I'm seeing things] where did you get it?
most of the ones I find are for the newer pickups thanx...Vernski

It is a Stainless cap, for our trucks and I got it from Borthers! They were the only one that had a fleet side cap!
The paint scheme is airbrushed and it mimics the 56' Nomad! I was really nervous about doing the airbrushing myself but, I really liked how it turned out!
I like it mostly because it is different & I did it myself!

More cutting, welding, and flanging. Out with the rust, in with the patch panels.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Yea man I like the way those lights took at night with both on, I got to get around to doing that.

Got her running!!! Took her for a test drive to fill up the tank and then off to a buddies house to figure out the roof issues, ran great! After all that I went over to the parts truck and stripped it of fenders and the wiper cowl and then laughed as my dog got in the engine compartment and couldn’t figure out how to get out!

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Went to my buddy Harry's house to check the progress on the wood for the bed...

It's planed down rough cut 2" x 10" 100 year old Southern Yellow Pine that was used in the roof system of the old Westinghouse factory buildings in East Pittsburgh, PA.

I bought it off a guy on CL that had been reclaiming and cleaning it to sell... reasonable.

Harry said it was hard on the planer!

He didn't like the nail holes either, but I think they add to the story; besides once it's in varnish they will all be pretty well filled in.

Next Harry's going to make final cuts and groove to GMC Paul's blueprint...

I love the grain and the deep colors.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Painted the hubcaps and steering wheel. Polished some chrome. I'm gonna take the hubcaps and badges to a friend that pinstripes to put orange on 'em. BTW, the truck is orange.

What kind of paint did you use on the steering wheel that it won't stain or wear off, just wondering what holds up, have never painted a wheel.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I haven't been posting on this thread yet, but decided I should start.

I got my park lamp and turn single lenses in today, along with a new turn signal switch and glove box. I also got a new license plate light. Got them all installed, although still having issues with my turn signal cable and wiring, so I am not quite ready to have the truck on the road yet.

I used Bulldog adhesion promoter then the same white acrylic urethane that I used on the rest of the truck.

Here's a thread that helped me.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

That's about 11.86 mpg if your numbers are accurate, I get a little better with my 283 that doesn't run right, but I'm about about 500 feet above sea level with little elevation change in most of my drives. I think you need a tune up to say the least, 15 mpg would be more reasonable, but I don't know that much about the straight sixes, so hopefully someone else chimes in who does.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I had an old '65 at one time with a straight six. I was able to get about 13 mpg with it on relatively flat ground. Back then, I had no clue how to tune motors up. I was only 17.

With my current '62, I was getting 8 mpg when I got it, with a 350 running on 2 barrel carb meant for the original 283. I changed the carb to a 4 barrel and my mileage increased to 14 mpg. When the transmission took a dump, I replaced it with a th350 and now get around 18 mpg for some reason, and I imagine I would see another increase if I bumped it up to a 700R4.

So, these trucks can get decent mileage. I would imagine the 6 cylinder could probably do pretty much as good, or even better.
