Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"
still got a little left...there is a slight long "bump" above the h-e-v-r that i have to address..was there from original ....no welding on this piece....it's so thin that this "distortion" was unseen until primer.....I'll get it though.....it's too neat to quit now.....Can u see what this would look like as a fender script?? So subtle and yet makes everyone go HUUUH??......Thinking i may cut the paint on the script back to bare metal after basing the entire gate...bonding clear over script..then clear whole gate...will give that "brushed " look.......jim

Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"
That's a pretty cool idea. I guessed the tailgate panel before I scrolled down, wasn't sure until I saw the cuts on the gate though. I like it!

Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"
The weird thing is it was the exact width I needed and keep all the lines of the panel intact...usually doesn't work out...I don't have tools to make a panel like that ...so this was the alternative.....81-up Square body gate with handle welded up by the way...did welding and body work before cutting panel out...lot's easier and less chance of warpage...another cool thing is that all of the "cut" edges are hidden behind upper and lower sills except for ends which will square up nicely............jim

Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"
Another feature that could be done with this is in the recess a trick gas cap could be mounted...I decided to use the side marker lite for 2 reasons..now that floor is raised the side marker is completely exposed on back side giving full "straight" access to tank bung...Also if u mounted the cap in the recess I think it would not be high enough for tank bung to fill properly....it's close and would work well if u left tank hanging down between frame rails but i'm having it made flush or near flush to bottom of rails...Yes another one of my "analism's".....can't take the tank hanging like it was an after thought!!
After lot of thought I'm leaning toward leaving the original tailgate handle...even bought the solenoids....but i'm leaving side markers, handles (although Camaro ),and putting trim back on.....truck is so low , handle (although ugly) shouldn't stand out ....well see....need to get moving on this project so less changes is better right now...Don't want to break the 7 year record of 67cheby!!............Mike u know I'm kidding!!!!!! By the way ...look at the bottom edge of this tri-plus gate...that's not the camera .....it is that crooked....heavy metal for a repop but man...........

Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"

Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"
Ok got over my illness.....back to the truck......got tubs nearly done..no pics yet .....but in between sandings....got some more little projects on bed in action..1st look at what front corner looks loke with stake pocket removed..fugly!!!! ....So i welded in pieces to smooth that out and cover the nutsert on front panel....just tacked in now ..will finish weld when i take it apart.....

Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"
Then went to side marker lites and probably don't need to explain this except in last pic u can see how much easier gas filler will be since floor is raised completely above lite opening.....will do this on other side as well to have charging inserts for batteries....trick but been done by many before me!! For those looking close, i will have to move this "arm" inward some but I dont have the billet markers in my hand yet to check the thickness...Oh yeah Boyd tank coming...will have about 2-3" drop in hose from gas filler to tank fill opening ...should fill ok!......more later.......jim

Re: 68 aka "Chained in Porterbuilt Prison"
Well got a little done...tubs in guide coat ...epoxy in am followed shortly by high-build.....finished pass. side marker opener....thought u might want to see the hidden tub flanges...will be drilled for a few bolts when final wood is in place....and last built a "coffin" to send my cowl to Justin at his shop "SCOTT'S HOT RODS" in Calif..Never seen better metal work than they do....and I'm biting the bullet (not cheap) and letting them shave my cowl............jim
