Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Bought a complete front axle with new 6-lug disc brakes assemblies, steering gear box, and steering stabilizer yesterday for $225. Thought that was a pretty good deal. Also on the look out for a 4X4 S10 rear diff with 6-lug.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
was doing an oil change on my daily and needed to move the truck out of the garage. it turned into a 30 minute drive. I got about 10 miles away from the house when I realized my hood was just sitting on the truck not bolted. luckily there was no issues. I have some other prokects to finish up but hop to get inside today to start pulling the interior apart.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Haha, I almost made the same comment today. That's a lot of boxes around the frame. One of my biggest frustrations with my build is constantly tripping on things as I try and move around the truck. Ugh.

1951 Panel Truck:
Anyone who's used an OEM Mustang II front end is familiar with brake line interference when using drop spindles. So today I adapted GM hoses to my MII calipers by grinding a slotted recess to accommodate the new hoses and a banjo bolt. This routed the hoses down away from the spindle and perfectly into open space. Yes, I could have used the Speedway braided stainless hose kit for this, or had hoses custom-made, but I prefer OEM parts whenever possible for on-road replaceability. That's what happens when you decide to buy a 10X17 covered storage unit right before you decide to strip your almost built truck, to majorly rework the frame! Also all the truck stuff that was taken off except for the rear end is in the garage! |

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
as part of my interior work I removed the "hot rod air" evaporator unit. its been hanging in the truck for about 10 years but has never been hooked up. my plan is to remove the covers , lube and clean everything, and bench test the unit. I got it out on the bench and started removing the screw on the cover but stopped. I want to do a little research before I tear into it. I also got my windshield wipers working. it was awesome! I had the electric wipers put in about 8 years ago but they never worked. the guy that installed them said he would fix them and then went out of business. I lived in the desert so it wasn't a big deal that they didn't work. here in Oklahoma you HAVE to have wipers. it took me all of 12 minutes to diagnose and get them working. I'm pretty pleased with myself. -EDIT- the a/c is an old " hot rod air" unit. they have been out of business for years now. I'm having trouble finding a lot of information about them. I was lucky to find a pdf of the installation. it doesn't really answer all my questions but I haven't really studied it yet. the worst part is that I'm missing parts. the controls were never installed and I'm pretty sure the guy kept them. I know I can get vents so that's not a big deal. I probably cant find " hot rod air" control switches. I'm hoping I can buy some vintage air switches that will work. has anyone pulled the covers off of their evaporator?

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I made this over the past few weekends. Between cutting and routering and fitting it that wasn't bad. The staining wasn't bad as well. But the Vanishing was the killer with 6 coats on all sides.Took it apart ten times the vanish it.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I pulled the covers off of the "hot rod air" evaporator and I was pleasantly surprised. besides one dead junebug it was clean. there is some dust but that's it. considering its been sitting unused for 10 years everything looks good. I'm going to hit it with the hose this weekend and really wash it. I will then lube everything that moves and start putting it back together. the case isn't in great shape. it was incorrectly mounted and the case took a beating. I'm going to have to brain storm some bracing to make sure the case isn't holding the weight of the unit. edit- I also bought a bulb for the dome light and hoped it would work. of course it didn't. I will check the wires on that this weekend too.

Calipers cleaned, painted, loaded and installed, wheels and tires put on for the first time, brake plumbing next.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
hi ho hi ho its into the garage I go. I removed the dome light body to make sure the wires were hooked up and they were. I traced the wire to the A pillar. the wire was wadded up at the top of the A pillar but didn't go through and hook to the fuse panel. I figured feeding a wire and plugging it into the fuse panel might not be too bad. well ran into an issue. I couldn't get it through the A pillar. I tried and tried and then started digging with my hand to see what the problem was. my entire A pillar is full of mud dobber nests! I yanked out what I could reach but I need some way to break up the nests down inside out of reach. I'm not sure what to use. I was thinking maybe a plumbing snake? that's where I'm at now. trying to figure out how to clear that pillar. I tried to run it down the passenger side A pillar is also full of mud dobber

Took a break today, got some different motor mounts, cleaned them up, sand blasted, then powder coated!

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I'm going to try a bent wire hanger to break up the mud dobber nests. I also found while studying the wiring diagram that the wire coming from the dome light and towards the fuse panel isn't even the right wire. the guy who did some work many years ago was an idiot. the wiring harness already has a dome light circuit wired. I also found the diagram to wire up the dome light to some extra under dash lights and door switches.
