Re: 61K10 build

Thanks Kimble Yea I am missing the ole chev for the last few yrs I've driven it in the CHRIST-mas parade, The new carb took out the hestitation issue but now it's still not 100%, Think I'm going to check for vacuum leaks around the intake and carb, replace the ole insulator gasket below the carb..I'll have to get me some carb cleaner and start spraying.

Re: 61K10 build

Well i squeezed it into my shop side of my garage. it's jacked up, and i started to take it apart (again) got some new longer wheel studs in one hub. wanted to know if they fit as i needed more. turned cold here so shops cold (I don't live in LA) crawling around on concrete seams to make the Bud taste better, at least at my age lol! also the old jeep type brake backing plates will be replaced with the newer style adj hardware.

Re: 61K10 build

new brake backing plates don't work. Hub wheel studs rub on the wheel cyl as plate is not recessed enough. need about 3/16 to 1/4". On the hunt again for some chevy 64-70 4x4 ft backing plates. Might just go with a open knuckle and be done with it. just pissed at the moment--------------

Re: 61K10 build

Here is some pics of my mock-up of disc brakes on the closed knuckle dana44. (Danw210) did this on his 3/4t dana hd44. It works for the 1/2t axle also. also rebuilt my lesf springs with new bushings. don't buy the bronze bushing from LMC as they are too short, and there u-bolts don't fit either. you can use the big one but the smaller ones are 3" wide but need to be 2-3/4 for the dana axle tubes. I am also using Captianfab's master/booster /hyd clutch plate. will post some more step x step later.

Re: 61K10 build

couple of more----the rear shackles are fine, you can see the difference in the front bushings. to correct this i used a small piece of the old bushing which was in good shape.

Re: 61K10 build

Jason---every thing including the spindles out. I figured if it didn't work i would just find an open knuckle d44 and have all new parts for it. the outer stub axle bearing surface needs to be turned down a few thou to fit the later spindle bearings. they have needle bearings instead of the brass bushing. I have some after-market poly bushings to replace the needle-b ones. maybe they could be reamed out some way so i wouldn't have to turn the shafts down? Everything could be put back to org by doing it that way. I guess we will see.

Re: 61K10 build

pic of gear set-up. (the red paint was a mark for me, disregard) Not fun at all, very time consuming. new master cyl, one of the calipers with line, booster and Capt-fabs mounting plate. (thanks Capt) don't know if a 9" booster is enough? also clutch master and linkage. adj proportioning valve for the rear.

have to re-do the front brake lines which is the easy part. I have a hyd flaring tool which makes it easy, with professional double flairs.

pic of re-built ft springs. have either 2 degree or 4* wedges to give the axle more caster. (hope it gives the steering a little more road feel)

Re: 61K10 build

61K10 great description on what you are doing.

I am moving toward doing the same to front and rear spring in 64K10. Was it hard to drive the spring eye shafts out? any special technique, spraying/soaking mine now.

May get back to you on where you got your parts if ok, once mine are apart and see what I need.

Your lock outs look the same or similar to ones on '64 front axle.

Re: 61K10 build

Interested in your thoughts on going to 3.31 gears if I read things right, with SM420 trans. I am in process of deciding which gear ratio to use, as will be rebuilding both front and rear axles soon. Planning to look at 3.08 to 3.73.
Need to look at first and second trans ratios to see what my minimum speed will be in each, e.g. 1500 to 2000 rpms in first and 1000 to 1200 in 2nd.

Changed gear in '86 with LY6 over drive 4 speed, from 3.08 to 3.73, because it was to fast in first at idle, minimum speed was 8 to 10 MPH with clutch out. Hard to drive in traffic.
