Re: My Big Fat Renovation
If your codes are like ours here, then you will need a row of 2 X 6 blocks on center up 8 feet from the bottom plate in the wall. Snap a line at 8' up from the bottom plate so the line will center the blocks for nailing for a sheet above and a sheet below. That if it's going to be inspected. If not...... I recommend it be done to strengthen the wall, You might want to check the nailing pattern that the inspectors want on the perimeter and in the field as well. Better to check now and save doing things over and after the sheeting is on.
Keep on keepin on nutz

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
I was actually going to do it at 4' (so there will be two rows).
I want to get all the walls up and square before I started.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
It's been a great few weeks with minimal rain on the weekends, however, last weekend was straight up awful. I got stuck at work all day friday, then sat and sunday were both in the 103-105* range with the heat index.
This weekend was weird. 93* friday... then low 70's and cloudy sat and sunday. I *almost* had to throw on a hoodie... While I probably could have kept the crane date as this friday, I moved it out a week. A couple of friends who thought they could get off work weren't able to, so I moved it to Sat. Sept 7th. It comes with a steep penalty though, an extra $45/hr, however, at this point, an extra $250/300 isn't that big a deal. I took this friday upcoming off (4 day weekend with labor day) so there will be some huge progress this weekend. The front wall will be complete and most of the sheeting should be up.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
I didn't take many pics last weekend which is why I didn't really do an update. Wasn't much to look at, just a lot of tedious busy work getting all of the windows roughed in along with finishing the left side wall.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
I had a goal of getting the entire back wall squared away, level, and door opening framed in this weekend.
That beam is heavy. It's 3 - 2x12s with 1/2 plywood sheets glued and nailed in between. The frame is an extra 1.5" tall and 3" wide, the inner framing will be treated 2x6s down to the floor.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
The headers above the doors and windows are 2x10's. Same treatment as the big doors, 3 - 2x10s with 1/2" plywood nailed and glued.
Probably overkill. Carrying the first 2 or 3 up the ladder wasn't bad... by 7 and 8 they were getting really heavy.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
Sometimes you have to get creative.
I also had to move the left wall back about 1/4" at the top (from level) and my wife doesn't have enough ass behind her to do it, so I put a steel stake in the ground and pulled it with a ratchet strap. Worked really well. I also got to get out my sawhorses I made.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
End of a beautiful weekend. I still can't believe it was in the low 70's in August.
This weekend coming up is supposed to be dry, low to mid 80's and low humidity I ran out of 2x10's to finish the man doors. The only thing I missed my goal on was that I would have really liked to have had all the window framing done (above the windows).

I'm glad it's missed us. It was all around us on Friday, but missed again. I'm sure it will rain every weekend when I go to sheet and shingle the roof.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
Took a 4 day weekend. Did almost nothing but work on the garage.
Thursday was not a fun day. I had projects due at work on Friday. I picked up my windows at lunch (window place was only 5 minutes from job, but 30 mins from house), then I went to Lowe's and got my last (hopefully) large load of 2x6s. Then I went back to work for 5 hours to complete my projects so I would be off Friday Made some good progress with the blocking.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
It's all a blur... sometime between sat/sun. Most of the time spent on the front was making sure everything was the same length/width/level, etc.
Of course the little center section was different going across.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
They've been on my front lawn for a few weeks now. They delivered them about 2 weeks earlier than they said they would. They thought I would be happy they squeezed me in... I was not... They told me 3+ weeks then called after 1 to tell me they were ready.
I have a crane scheduled for Sat. to pluck them up and slid them over. I hope my friends and I can move quickly... it's an extra $45/hr for the crane for weekends. I originally had it scheduled on a friday because a few friends said they could help (and it would be A LOT cheaper)... but then they couldn't get the time off... I was worried about the hurricane damaging my structure before I could get the roof on to tie it all together (which is why I stopped putting sheeting up) but for the last few days our forcast doesn't even show rain this week. I hope it misses us and moves the hell away from the coast all together.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
End of yesterday.
I have a little bit of blocking to finish, but overall, the main structure is complete. Big boards do not like to be left on a trailer for 2-3 days. A couple of my 2x12s required some serious finagling to get even close.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
I love our coastline in the Carolina's, but freaking downtown Charleston floods during a normal heavy rainstorm. People are complaining about the mandatory evacuation... but of course, if we did nothing and waited until the last minute, we'd be labeled idiots for waiting... You can never win with everyone.

Re: My Big Fat Renovation
Little bit of a frustrating weekend. Crane didn't show up. I had words with the crane company. They're coming this Saturday at a reduced hourly rate.
3 of my friends showed up, they were ready to work, so I had them help me tackle the sheeting. We did in 4 hours what would have taken me two weekends. Because there was so many of us, two were able to lift the sheets to the other two on ladders and just dropped the sheeting in place. I would have had to put up scaffolding, drug them up the scaffold one at a time... Since they're all coming back next weekend now, I wanted to get them out ASAP so I left the window holes alone and most sheets only had a handful of nails shot in them. I could finish that up by myself (only one nail gun anyway). I took the rest of the day "off" to do some much needed lawn maintenance, then watch some college football.
