Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Took the crossmember over to my buddy's shop, put it up on the bench and took it most of the way apart. Can't get the ball joints off. I cut the rivet heads and used a punch but the rivets wouldn't budge.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Got my GMC ready to be drivien for the first time since 1997...going to a car show tomorrow. So far it has new rear brake shoes with wheel cylinders, all new cap, coil, rotor, wires, plugs, points, and condensor. In addition to all that, I had to free up 5 stuck intake valves, straighten 3 push rods, break free the door mechanisms, and fix the gas gage. The truck has sat so long, a lot of things on it are corroded together. I still have to figure out why the front parking lights & turn signals don't work, and the heater doesn't work. I've gone thru almost a full can of penetrating oil working on her.

I had the same problem. I ended up using an air chisel between the ball joint and the control arm. It took a min but, it finally worked a gap in there so I could pry it the rest of the off.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Spent all day mounting the new fender emblems. Who would think so much time could be spent on such a simple project. The upside being both sides came out exactly the same and I'm very pleased with the results. Details and photos tomorrow.

They just did this on trucks TV Saturday. Not sure if you can watch the segment but they cut off the ball joint with a torch then heated the rivets with the torch and used an air hammer to get the rivets out. Looked pretty easy if you have a torch.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Bought a toolbox that I will be refurbishing to stick in the back. It is a drop in style so it will sit below the level of the side rails so it won't be seen easily. It's diamond plate but pretty beat up. I think it will be getting a coat of paint to match the truck.

Thanks, I have seen more older trucks lately and was pleased to find the following garage. They have worked on several trucks and the owner has a 65 yellow chevy, they will be helping me with my wiring shortly. Here a few pics:

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Not exactly work on my truck, but I just spent the last hour and a half reinserting at least a dozen missing photos in my build thread that Imageshack unceremoniously feels a need to randomly drop. And I’m not done yet.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Bought the power steering kit from the Captain and picked up a 1.25" front sway bar from Pick and Pull. Ordered up the Energy Suspension bushings for it and I'm going to finish painting it up today.

I was thinking of using that silver Hammertone paint on the sway bar to give it some colour. How durable is that stuff?

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Continued with tear down this past weekend. Hadn't planned on removing the cross member, but could not think of a good reason not to once that was all that was left attached to the frame. Actually, cleaning, degreasing, and rust removal will be a TON easier with it off

Now time for rust removal, then POR15 on the frame.
