Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Got the truck home today. The door was repainted last night, and wet sanded this morning. It'll have to be polished up later.
The shop is storing the hood until I get the hinges for it. They also painted the defrost vents to match the body. I installed them with new hoses, but it's going to take some work to get everything to settle in with those. I pulled out the heater, looked it over and compared it to another one I had. The plastic had some melt damage to it, so I swapped some parts between them to have the best of both. Then painted it up and installed it. Other than that all I did was work on some wiring routing and connections and installed the wire guide on the radiator support. I need to re-wire the alternator for an internally regulated one, and still need to decide where I'm putting the ECU for the EFI. (just wondering, if I bonded a thin board to the bottom side of the glove box if that would have enough support to hang the ECU from.) I'm not convinced yet I'm going to use that old bench seat. The split bench I had is just way too comfortable and could be recovered to match the interior. Hot and humid tomorrow, so not sure I'll be out there doing much.

Looking great! How much does the ECU weigh? Might work depending on the weight....

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Maybe half a pound. Aluminum casing. I could maybe add a bracket to rest on the top of the heater for support. It would be hidden, yet accessible (sp?).

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Got up early while it's still relatively comfortable outside and pretty much finished up the underhood wiring harness. I adapted it for an internally regulated alternator using the info here:
http://www.chevelles.com/techref/tecref14.html Make sure you read the red print below the wiring diagrams. Everything has been retaped, but there will still be some routing done, etc. once the lights get installed. I plan on upgrading the headlight circuit also with a relay, and will need to add wiring for electric fans. Since I had an extra battery power lead for the regulator that's no longer used, I can use it for a power source on the driver side.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I had 4 heater controllers to pick from, so I did, and decided to shine it up with some steel wool. The outside of it is shiny, but there is some paint or something on the inner part that dulls it. Here's a couple side by side pics to see the difference.
Then this afternoon I got the other wheel well in and stood the bed back up on the front panel. I need to mask and paint the bottom, probably tomorrow night, cause it's hotter than hell out there. Dew point is 75, ick. I had to set the cowl panel somewhere, so on the truck seemed the best option. Looks good. The wife is agreeable to keeping my split bench seat, which is the more comfortable option. I'll have to do something with the seat mounts, but shouldn't be an issue. Anyone need a good 67-68 bench seat? We also have come to an agreement on using the dark aqua interior colors. The door panels look great. The seat would have to be recovered, so I'll probably have the arm rests and dash pad made to match also. Undecided on whether or not I'll use a headliner. It can always be added later.

Nice work on polishing that up. On the heater panel, I think they look really good with black where the silver paint is

Very nice work! I feel ya on the heat and the humidity! It's here too brother! I agree, I'd paint that extra control center black and see how you like it.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I hope you had a good party!
can I just ask one off topic question; on the beneath picture it looks like you booster bracket is angled upwords..or not? I'm converting to disks on my '69 c10, but for me it should angle downwords to line up with the original hole in the firewall? sorry to bother you with this..

Some people have modified the mounting and basically put the pedal rod directly into the back of the booster without using the big bracket. It's something that can be done later if I wanted to. Got home last night and finally sprayed the bed bottom black. Couple things to note here. First I used rustoleum from a quart, not rattle can. It's cheap and I figured easy to use and would be good for a rattle can touch up in the future. I don't think I'll go that route in the future though and here's why. You need to reduce it down, quite a bit acyually, in order to spray through a regular spray gun. Now that's not a bad thing, but it makes it runny on the part being sprayed. Really runny in fact. Now I know part (all) of the problem was that I was in a hurry and sprayed heavy so it would all be coated good last night. The problem with rustoleum is that you can't recoat after a couple hours. You either recoat right away or you wait until a day or 3 goes by and it is fully dry, otherwise it will ruin the first coat you sprayed. I didn't have time for 3 days worth of 3 coats. Now on the bottom side of the bed I have no issues with runs, etc, but elsewhere it would have been a major issue. Another problem was spray gun adjustment. At first it wouldn't flow worth a damn, and it was splotchy, etc. Made a mess of things in the garage too because it dries so slow that every place with overspray is tacky afterwards. I had to use mineral spirits to clean my eye glasses and my arms. Nasty. So all in all, I would spend the extra and buy another quart of black nason for this type of job. Anyway, it turned out black, which is all I was really going for, and I'll be able to use a rattle can for spot touch ups. It still has tacky spots on it, 8 hours later, unreal.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
Looks good from here
Although I know what you mean about the rustoleum. I am thinking John Deer Blitz black for my next frame and undercarriage. Meant to be sprayed and is tough enough for farm equipment. Also is a satin color like the factory painted the frame and undercarriage/engine.

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I've used the John deere Blitz black on my 95 F-350 daily driver, and it has worked pretty well. My favorite chassis paint was chassis black from sikkens. But that stuff has gotten too expensive for me now.
Nice work on the bed! It looks great from here too!

Re: Over 25 Years Later, Finally My 71 C-10 Truck Build
I appreciate the props, but in this case, if you were any closer than where the pic was taken from, you would understand my dismay. In any case, like ir or not, the bed went to the body shop this afternoon and about half the sanding is already done. It'll be painted soon and I'll be in Idaho when they bring it back to my garage. I'll probably have my daughter email me pics of it while I'm away so I can post them. I'm trying to talk them into setting the bed back on the frame when they return it, we'll see.
Week after next I'll get some time to work on it again. I'll have the hood hinges and other parts to install and it will get driven. Even if it's just around the block, it will move under it's own power again.
