First off, thanks for going through the trouble of posting all your hard work and experience for us mortals. You save us all alot of trouble. I'm working on a DD myself and was curious what you have set up for ventilation in your make-shift booth? Box fans? I'm impressed with the lack of dust.
Thanks
Jay.
So far on this one I have just closed the door to the booth and sprayed! I have only been shooting small sections so their is not alot of build up and I have a fresh air full face set up for me. I do have plans for a roof exiting explosion proof fan before I start my 2wd Blazer this year. I have a 3' wide door in one of teh perminate walls that will get teh center cut out to house filters for the fresh air comming in. The bigest thing is keeping the both clean and the floor wet for keeping dust down for a set up like this. I feel the dust I did get in the cab was from the booth not being as clean as it should have been since I was rushing to get spray time in. Or from the exhaust vents on my full face mask. But what dust did get in the paint will sand and polish right out if I decide to do so. I the bigest thing is my shop is seperate from the house and the only flames out their are from my space heaters and they are shut off before spraying once the booth is up to temp.

Just the plastic covers along side the intake. Thay will be the blue body color.

Well looks like I will be out in the shop tonight again untill the early AM getting the doors and stuff ready for paint. My Mom could not make it up to baby sit due to bad weather and my wife is on a dead line so she had to work this weekend. I might be able to shoot the doors and stuff on Sunday.

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

I personally would like to copy how you did your cab roof. As you can see mine needs alot of work. Your build is something a lot of us can learn from. Would like your opinion on this type of repair.

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

Ah yes the four bolt repair! You unbolt the four body mounts, lift off cab and set aside. Set new cab down and rebolt, problem solved!

You know this might be able to be repaired but in all honesty I would go with the steps listed above. Once the rust has gotten as far and as deep as yours apears it is realy about beyond repair because no matter what you do it will be coming back or you will end up replacing every part of that cab to fix the problem. Sorry it is not what you wanted to hear I am sure but it is the best advice I can give.

Are you going to paint the rims body color like Johns truck or just stay with the factory wheel color?

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

Well last night was another long night in the shop after my wife and son went to sleep. I got the doors, front fenders blocked and ready for paint. I also blocked teh top side of teh hood and it is ready for some slight spot repair and I cleaned and sanded the under side of the hood so it is ready for paint. I hope to be able to get out their this afternoon and shoot the doors, fenders and bottom side of the hood. That will leave the top of the hood, cowl. glove box door and engine covers for later this week. Then I will need to shoot the rad support (in place) so I can start bolting this stuff together. Then once the cab is 100% I will pull the truck out side and roll the bed in for some light mods and paint. I also need to do the handle flip on the tail gate and i will be doing a How-To for this.
Another 5hrs spent in the shop last night to add to the bill. I would hate to be the guy paying for this build

No thats perfect, I appreciate your input. Someone else mention that I should just get another cab. I figured if you would not waste time on it that would be good enough for me. Thanks for the help.

No it will not be fore sale but right now the hrs on the truck with curent paint time would be almost 15K just for labor Then add in truck parts and the truck as well. That would give you a ball park on what a shop build like this would set somone back.

The doors, fender and under side of the hood are in progress as I type. I have the tack coat on the parts now letting it set up then I will start the wet coats Pic's tonight!

That's only about $60/hr, you're worth more than that!

Re: LFD's low buck truck build!

I thought I would add this one as well. It has been storming the last few days here so I could not put the truck out side even if I wrapped it their is way to much wind. So it is slid to the side of the booth, wraped and a second plastic wall put up in front of it. Sure makes for a small booth

Yes I have and I like 2 stage much better but single stays with the Low Buck idea. I would rather spend $500 on decent single stage then $500 on cheap base and clear that will start to fog and lift in a few years of being out in the sun. Plus this is a DD/beater and single is so easy to spot repair.
