Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Found out today that its time to put Two Tones old heart to rest. Went for a drive yesterday and on the way home experienced a "Drop" in cylinders for lack of better words. Oil is fine...spark plugs are firing...carb seems fine(still wondering though) and have yet to do a compression test. Last I tested they were at around 100 pounds each....some 50+ pounds under what they should be. Drove the truck to church...let it sit for about 4 hours...leave the parking lot and I'm struggling to keep the thing even running.....so since home is only 3 miles away I put my foot to the floor(literally) and zoom home. Seems like the rings just gave out or something cause it has like no power and when I down shift to stop its almost as bad as coasting. lol Ah well! That ol engine has been through ALOT and is just needing a long winter's nap. Good excuse to throw the new one in sooner. That is if it ain't carb issues....I'm a pull the carb and make sure something ain't clogged in the jets...but by the way it was popping and sputtering I think its the engine finally saying "No more" lol.

EDIT! Fixed it!!! At least seem to have. lol Carb issues as I suspected. Pulled the carb off....dumped out the gas and filled the carb with carb cleaner...shook it like a mad man....dump the carb cleaner and redid the procedure three times....throw it back on....fire it up and with a sputter clunky sput she suddenly clears up...Re-tune it again and now she's running smoother than ever. Might a been some carbon in the valves...not sure...as old and worn as that ol 6 banger is anything can happen....yet she still rev to 5K.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Today I went to the salvage yard in Longmont and met up with fellow member Lee 64. He helped me and the owner of the lot, Dave, cut the 12 bolt rear end free that I purchased last week. It turned out not to be a Posi rear end after all, but the stamp on the outside indicates that it is the correct gear ratio. Lee 64 also helped me pull a driver side door for my '62, and then we found and pulled an underseat jack kit for another member on this forum, _mg. Dave really understands the importance of keeping these parts out of the crusher and opened up more once he knew I was legitimately interested in using the parts to preserve their history.

After we left the salvage yard, I went over to Lee 64's house to see his project. He has a sweet 64 short step with a 383 stroker that is well on its way to completion. It was good to meet another guy who appreciates these trucks. He showed me a really trick fuel filler door and a secret security HEI shutoff setup to deter theft. He also left me with a parting gift: he had the glass lens that I needed to complete my reverse light parts search. A great day!

Sorry, pimpston, I tried to take pics but my memory was full on my phone and I couldn't take any. I will be going back again soon. And I promise there'll be pics. There's a wealth of stuff there.

Started cutting my long bed to a shortbed. Got it disassembled today and yesterday. I wasn't able to use any cross sills because they were rotted (thank god my birthday is the 28th, lol) so I'll order new. Got 8" cut from the rear, maybe tomorrow night I'll get 12" cut from the front and see how she looks mocked up pending work. I haven't been getting home until 7:30-8 at night lately so we will see!

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III

Got the Weber 32/36 on and the new HEI in place. Used a small block wire kit because I couldn't beat the price. Dressed it best I could. 6 cyl HEI wires would have cost almost as much as the dizzy. Truck drives like a dream. No misses, hesitations, accelerates so smooth now. Still rowing the crap out of the gears going up hill though. I wouldn't call it a power gain as much as I would an improvement in drive-ability. I was getting mid to low 16's for mpg prior to this. Anxious to see the difference at next fill up.

Looks like you used the same Speedmaster HEI I did? lol You should notice a bit better mileage to. Webers are also more known for smoother performance when tuned right. That's funny...I got a good set of HEI wires specifically for a 6 cylinder all cut and crimped from Napa for $25 bucks.
