Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Today I got the fuel gauge working again - float had a pinhole and was full of fuel. Being Sunday with no dealership open to sell me a new float, I just fixed the old one. So far, so good - we'll see if it's still floating in a few days. Also pulled the glove box, part of the AC shroud, and the control cables to try and fix a heater problem. They lubed up pretty well, I bet they'll work great with the new levers on the way. New tires a few days back, getting the brakes dialed in this week, buttoning this thing up... the new LS swap is running awesome!

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

It is with no small amount of personal satisfaction that I announce (working alone no less) the reattachment of the canister hardlines! I had to fiddle with it a bit but I kept both calm and patient. At one point I called my neighbor and left a message requesting his help, then BINGO I got it! I called him back telling him not to worry but here he came anyway. I love my neighbors!

Tomorrow I am going to start making the actual fuel lines (supply lines). *Happy dance.

I had a couple molson canadian beers after the work was done. That's the best time. It's nice to take a break, sit back and look at all the work that has been done. As I tell the wife, we are not just drinking beer in the shop. There is a lot of R&D going on planning the next step. You don't want to screw something up and have to do it over.

Did you make that cowl screen or did you purchase it from a vendor? LMC, Brothers, etc.... IMO, I like the way you left it in the ss. Don't paint it, it has great contrast that way. And heck its stainless, you don't have to paint it, it wont rust.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Its actually starting to look like something! Its amazing to find out how big of a difference it makes to start from the FRAME!! I originally tried to line up fenders with one original fender still on the truck... Ashamed to say I actually had the 6' pry bar on it! Just for the fenders! Then I finally gave in and listened to pops and started from frame leaving all bolts hand tight. Wow what a difference.I've only "hung" them for now. I know the real test will be my patience when I have to button it all up and set my body lines. At least I have routing paths for my electrical now, total rewire. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Won't be long now til I'm back on the road again terrorizing the neighborhood with those "super" 40-flowmasters. I'm sure they've thought I moved by now, considering its been almost ten years that it's been off the streets...

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Drove RAT to the local NAPA store to get a battery for The Boss' door slammer.

On the way out, I found out that the electric gate was broken. Got out and opened it like a real gate.
Came home. Opened and closed it like a real gate again (the dog is old, but she wanders)...

Installed the battery in the car. The electric garage door opener wouldn't close the door. Or open it. Then it would.
Then it wouldn't. Then it would and wouldn't with the remote. Got the ladder. Fixed the track...Broken aluminum
support...severed wires. "Reset". Put the ladder away.

Went back out and fixed the closing bracket (it's electrical)...and then the latch bracket) on the gate.

It's all fixed...for now.

Not a good day for electrical crap...It's 11:07 a.m. and I need a nap.

Was that about the truck?

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Well I finally got the truck all back together and back on the road today. It was a long hard winter doing all the body work and paint. Took it out for a cruise today to show some friends and family. Still have to put wood in the box floor, mount my side mirrors and get the fuel gauge working. But it on the road.

Allchevy58 - Those fender wells look sweet. Can't wait to replace my rusted out ones.

I also used some rattle can that matched awesome, waiting for more to come in the mail to clean up engine bay.

Love to cowl screen. I think I would have painted it to match the body though.

Hahahahaha! That's one of the things that makes these trucks great. The differences in taste when building design mods.

FWIW, I absolutely LOVE the looks of the cowl screen. Exactly the way it was done.

That's what makes horse racing, too.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

It's about time I got busy and did a much needed brake job on my 70 GMC and decided to swap the cab on my 72 1 ton dump truck. Have the week off and the brake job didn't go so well. Ended up using 8 can of brake cleaner on the 4 drum brakes. Wow, what a mess. two of the wheel cylinders have been leaking for some time. That coupled with the rust from mostly just sitting the last two years. Also found a kinked brake line on the rear. Now I know why I had hardly any breaks. Need help. I completed replacing three of the four wheels cylinders and I'm down to the last one on the front. I can't get the last wheel cylinder off. I can't get the big retaining bolt out to get the wheel cylinder off! The other side came off after a couple hit with a 2 lb. hammer on the 1 1/8 wrench. No go on the other side. The bolt is starting to round off. Help! Am I going to have to heat it up to get it to break free? I don't have a torch. Any suggestions? Since I have decided to go ahead and replace all the metal break lines I 'm at a stopping point on the GMC until I order all new lines. So I started on the cab swap. I have a 72 C 10 truck I'm going to use for the cab and front clip. Here is what I got done to day. Hope to get the cab off tomorrow.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

The rust is really bad on the cab and front clip. The drivers door hinges are shot. the truck had a fender replaced some time and they tack welded it to the cab along with the rockers bondoed to the bottom of the front fenders.

I got the front fenders on and adjust pretty close. I then got the grill, one chrome strip and the bumper on.

Shifter would not pull back and allow me to shift into reverse or first. Drove home from work using second and third.

Got home, pulled the steering column apart and lubricated all the surfaces where stuff slides on each other. Shifts like a dream now.
